A few layers of good, tough linen, maybe even an arming jack, a bucker and short sword? They're pretty solidly geared for a fight. Talk to any good HEMA instructor and they'd be perfectly happy to fight with that. Perfectly happy to wreck some shit, too. Such accountrements were pretty much the day to day wear of Knights and members of militant orders.
