Mysterious Mangrove Portal

Legends tell of a pit in the middle of the mangroves which calls sleepwalkers to leap into its darkness, where they disappear without a sound... Perhaps the party can determine its mystery?

I'm sticking to spooky, ominous maps for October, and this is my latest installment. A towering tree's gnarled roots have twisted into a strange tunnel. Where does it lead?

Why, wherever you need! It might be a swamp druid's entrance to the Underdark, a gateway made by an incursion of extraplanars, or a Deku-tree-esque creature that oversees an ancient portal network.

Let's collaborate and turn the comment section into a grand collection of weird tree portal ideas!

Thanks to you, this map is released under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license.

Very weird haha. I'd love to peek behind your DM screen.

Weirdly enough, exactly what I was needing for an adventure this week. Thank you so much!

Oof, that clip makes my head spin. Good stuff.

Heh heh heh... yesss... Like something out of Ambrose Bierce or Algernon Blackwood.

THIS. IS. SPARTA. Seriously, tho, I like the subdued color palette. Swampy green, purplish shadows? It really nails the idea that it's swampland that's green but, like, not too green? I've been having fun recently with the idea that when players fall into holes in the ground, they end up falling out of a vertically-oriented portal or 180 degree flipped area, just to give a bit of a mindfuck. Right out of the bat they know that they are in a place that is at right angles to wherever, like that final scene in As Above, So Below. (Spoilers on who survives the catacombs in the movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjCknErVMIw)
