This map (and the next) are based on the Godaido Temple in Matsushima, where you must cross a series of bridges and islets to reach the large temple building. I've not included the souvenir store parked out front, but otherwise it's a rather faithful adaptation!
While exploring this place in person, and ever musing about maps, I couldn't help but think the "open air corridor" this created would make for an interesting encounter, with beefy character pushing over the bridges and ranged characters hurling spells and bolts from behind. (Plus the mischievous wizard flying over everything to bypass your hard work)
Perhaps the Island Temple's kami has grown restless or jealous and has entered the material plane with a host of warriors to wreak havoc? Perhaps a sealing ritual must be cast on the site of its temple in order to drag it back to its own plane? Why, maybe it's just some merrow who have set up camp on sacred ground?
What ideas can you come up with to get a party to force their way across these bridges? Please share them in the comments. All level brackets welcome!
