Gothic Hourglass

Hi there, my favourite people!

While this fancy hourglass does fit dice, it's also a stylish piece that will bring joy to your home, office, or ominous castle ruin.

Okay, it's no accident that this gothic-styled hourglass happens to fit polyhedral dice - it was intentionally designed so that it would.  The neck of the central hourglass figure remains sufficiently open to allow standard dice to fall through, which means this can serve to roll dice in the most showy and obnoxious way possible.  It'll also store quite a lot of dice!

So, I mentioned storage, there, but you're thinking "wait, there's a big hole at the top, things will just fall out!"  This is very true, which is why there's another model on the way that is a case to hold the hourglass and enclose that top aperture.  This is also why there's mention of optional magnets, below...

Print Description

This is a regular mode print, and is designed for straightforward printing - no supports required, naturally!  The mesh of the central hourglass form might test your retraction settings, though :)

Despite the amount of detail in this model, the first layer is quite simple and intended to maximise bed adhesion for printability.

Print Dimensions

The Gothic Hourglass occupies 105mm x 105mm on the print bed and is 166mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Optional Magnets

The tops and bottoms of the four corner posts have allowance for our old friends, the 6mm x 3mm cylindrical magnets.  This isn't terribly useful right now, but there's a case on the way that will have corresponding magnets.

Scalability

This model will happily scale up or down, but bear in mind that the magnet holes mentioned above will scale, too, so if you're planning to use the case, that may possibly be relevant :)

Print Orientation

The hourglass prints right-way-up, like so:

Further Thoughts

I'm still just amazed sometimes that our humble printers can render these things into physical existence - how did we ever furnish ourselves with stylish gothic accessories before 3D printers were around?!

Happy printing!

It might! I think the very top layers will be the questionable part, without infill to support them. It's worth a try! 馃馃槑馃

I'm thinking this might be cool to print with translucent filament, it LOOKS like this should print with 0% infill...is that right? I'm gonna try it 馃榿

Hmm, I've never tried such things! Funny thing, I'm so caught up in designing that I don't really do a lot in the way of print tuning or postprocessing - there are plenty of people out there who make much nicer prints of my stuff than I do :D

@Clockspring 3D - I just picked up some of this Protopasta Mermaid's Teal filament for the first time.. Protopasta's website states that this filament can be heat treated or annealed after printing. I am curious if that is that something you do to the prints you post pictures of on here? Also - thank you for creating all these fun prints!
