Golden Rhombus is Easier to spell than Rhombic Triacontahedron

I hadn't even heard of rhombic triacontahedra before a comment on the Cuboctahedron model sparked my interest!  It's a polyhedron made up entirely of identical rhombus faces, and those faces are in fact golden rhombi!  Nerd out on polyhedra on Wikipedia here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhombic_triacontahedron

For our purposes, all you need to know, is this:

a) There are 30 faces, all the same

b) There are 20 vertices where 3 faces meet

c) There are 12 vertices where 5 faces meet.

So, you'll want to print 30 of the rhombus faces, 20 of the three-hole corner brackets, 12 of the five-hole corner brackets, and 120 bolts!  As before, you can use either the flat or regular bolts as you see fit!

Assembly isn't too tricky - just build it up with the three- and five- hole brackets appropriately.  I found it easier to construct a five-face "lid" and then build the rest so that lid could be bolted in on top.

Printing Tips

The orientation of the parts should be pretty obvious - the rhombus plate prints with the inset side up, and the two corners print with the flat side down.  Much like this:

The bolts are as per the other bolted polyhedra - they print head down, and you can use either the flat bolt or the regular bolt.

This one should be pretty resilient to printing issues, but you'll want your top layers of your rhombus plates to look nice, so take care of those :)

These files (including the bolts) are on dropbox under 810 Golden Rhombus

Final Thoughts

This one came about from a comment on the cuboctahedron model!  It doesn't take much to get me sold on such things when they're already so appealing...

These things are so much fun to make that they'll no doubt pop up again eventually (stellated polyhedra are a distinct possibility), but probably not for a little while now, as there are other things I'd like to move on to first!  That said, there is one more polyhedron already designed and in test printing, so that'll be up before too long, and it's going to be a big one, and it involves decagonal faces!

Until then, stay safe and have fun :)
