A Kaleidocycle Catch-up!

It seems that putting comments quietly on posts is not a great means of announcing new versions of designs, so I figured I should post something a bit more useful!

Thank you all for the amazing feedback!  The main pic above is the direct result - a much more resilient planetary gear design.  I halved the number of teeth and doubled their dimensions, then added bevel rings to the outside of the cogs.  All of that means that things are much, much less likely to come apart on very precise printers!

Also, it looks different!

The Planetary Kaleidocycle folder has both versions: Coarse (above) and the original Fine (below).

Now, onward to the Evolved Kaleidocycle!

The main bit of feedback I had was that it would be nice to have a narrower version - so we have two!  The Slimline (yellow, below) and Ultra Slimline (green, below) models are in the same directory as the original version (red, below).  The main thing that's nice about those new ones is that they lay flat in two orientations, and so they go neatly into a pocket, for all those times you really need to carry a kaleidocycle around with you :D

Now, I do plan to make one more of these things, but it'll be for the sake of a tutorial video.  The result will be something along the lines of the Evolved Kaleidocycle, though I'll talk through the different designs through which I've progressed, and talk about the relative merits of each... stay tuned!

Meanwhile, I have a non-kaleidocycle model to post up, so prepare for more spam soon! :)

Haha, I can't deny I had one with me all day today. It's the new fidget spinner :P

I love this design. I've printed them all, and have one with me nearly every day. They make for great ice breakers and conversation starters. Great work on all of them. Make more, and I'll print more.
