loved your reaction to this show so much. i remember watching the least season and seeing so many people on twitter hating on the finale saying it could’ve been perfect with kendall but shiv ruined it to be petty. to me, that perspective is missing a big part of the heart of the show. this ending is so heartbreakingly honest. these people are so broken from the lives they lived; there was never going to be a happy ending for any of them. kendall DOES have it in him… but that’s not a good thing. they make it clear that logan died sad and alone on a plane with no one there who would give a fuck about him if they didn’t get something from him. and that scene with kendall crushing roman’s stitches is just so heart wrenching when you think about him yelling at logan for hitting roman way back then. kendall has become his father and will only get worse with power, and shiv can’t swallow that pill. she spent all season facing insane misogyny from her brothers and mattson for committing the crime of being pregnant. i don’t see how people can begrudge her for not wanting kendall to have it after the way he speaks about her and pushes her out. and you hit the nail on the head with the fact that shiv’s ending is not happy either. she will spend her whole life adjacent to power but never really getting it because she is a woman. roman is the only one of the kids with a semi-happy ending and he only gets it because he is willing to accept they are all bullshit. what a brilliant ending.

The characters really make this show, and they’re all so interesting to examine like bugs under a microscope. Funny how Tom got to the top of the pile. Turns out the secret was to be a completely subservient suck-up and be unashamedly transparent about it. If everyone knows you’ll always suck the biggest dick in the room, that makes you predictable and helpful to keep around. Logan knew he could depend on Tom as long as he was in charge, and Mattson figured out the same thing. No need to worry he’ll betray you, he doesn’t want to be the top guy he just wants to ride the best coattails he can find.

Even though it's stressful and frustrating I think they really nailed something timeless with the characters and plot.
