The silent stare off at the end of Mariko's ending was so valid. I like her line at the end: I am no peasant to be trodden on. I am daughter of the great Lord Akechi Jinsai. My line has been samurai for a thousand years, and I will never be captive, or hostage, or confined. RIP Mariko 🌸

Nicole

Good point. He failed to realize just how committed Mariko was

Franklin

Which was a smart move. Actually literally his only move in that scenario. Crimson Sky was such a dope move

Franklin

very heart-wrenching

Franklin

Damn, man, I couldn’t stop fucking crying this whole time! Good lord. Much worse than when I watched it before. My heart is open from a weekend of music and community, I guess!! God I love this show. Thank you for going on this journey with us. I see that they are in preproduction for season 2 although I don’t think there is source material for anything further, I really hope they keep the quality up.

Cristabel

Did the ending leave anyone else wanting something more? I don't even know what that is, but I didn't feel closure. I'll have to ruminate on it.

Melissa

You had it right, btw, that the shinobi are there to capture Mariko. Ishido can't let her leave, and he can't let her die (like you said, rock and a hard place). His only move is to capture her, disarm her, and basically lock her in a padded room until Toronaga's dealt with.

Chris

Perfectly imperfect ending. It was meant to stand alone, and when they decided to continue the series I admit to feeling a bit let-down.

Susan B

so well done

Franklin

ah😭

Franklin

damn so good

Franklin

so real

Franklin

I just pray they don't pull a Game of Thrones

Franklin

I hope they don’t pull a Season 8 Game of Thrones debacle. The book ends where this season ends, and it was originally planned to be one season only.

Susan B

big no

Franklin

I think having “bandits” come from outside the castle to kidnap Mariko would give Ishido plausible deniability.

https://youtu.be/6QAZaj_0DYI?si=-tJ6jOdlnM3lN0CS This Actors on Actors Interview made me cry because Tom is such a caring and considerate individual when it came to his questions for Anna and the responses. And they also make such rather profound connections between Loki S2 and Shogun during their disucssion, so check it out for a good time!

Has any man in Mariko’s life valued HER wishes the way Blackthorn does?

Susan B

The book ends where this ends. They only decided to do additional seasons because the show was so popular, and I am hoping that what comes next doesn’t dishonor what was achieved here. Some things should end with ambiguity and leads what’s next to our imaginations.

*Mild pre-watch spoiler warning* Yea, I was in NO RUSH to get to these episodes lmaooo. The first time I watched episode 9, I took a big break before episode 10. I felt SICK. But then episode 10 in it's heart-breaking beauty was able to honor the strength and power of Mariko. Instead of an army, he sent a single woman. She was the Crimson Sky. How beloved, admired, respected, HONORED, do you have to be, to be the daughter of a treacherous king slayer and still bring an entire nation to its knees with your death... Mariko is at the tippy top of my list of realest women I've ever seen on screen. Anna won all of the awards for this and she should. I actually cried when she won. I'm gonna link a video i want you to watch Frank, brb!

I love the call-back to episode one: “Why tell the future to a dead man?” Omi was a spy all along.

Susan B

Let your hands be the last to hold her. This makes me ugly-cry.

Susan B

The scene of Blackthorn as an old man is a dream. He thinks of that image in the moment when he decides to end his life as a protest in favor of the village. Watch that scene again and you’ll see him make a choice: that life as an old man back in England, clutching Mariko’s cross, or ending his life here for a purpose. He mutters, “Fuck it,” and chooses death.

Susan B

Kleenex box at my side. Coffee. Am I ready for this? 😳

Susan B

Season 2????!!! I didn't know there would be a 2nd season. I just looked it up. Three seasons planned. Google search says probably not getting season 2 until 2028.

1:07:23 Just before you paused, I was thinking how intentional and beautiful it is the way the characters take the time to look at one another -- how slowly she raises her head to make eye contact. It moves me deeply. These small details, like you referenced that the podcast discusses, genuinely show how love behaves and reveals itself. Stunning and evocative. I appreciate so much more now that I'm watching this again. Thank you for that.

Melissa

How can this be the end? There is so much more was it canceled? The flow is disturbing without the elder Blackthorne holding the cross and his grandchildren, asking about the swords and how they got a neck in them and was the cross given to him by a heathens? It’s broken. Are we waiting on a continuation? Did they lose funding? The depth and the beauty of this entire entirety is unfinished. It was so heartbreakingly, beautiful and so insightfully showing the division of the sectarianism of Christianity and the unhealthy continuation to this day of its use by empires to divide their people of humanity and peace. These continued Empires have proven themselves unworthy of our collective consciousness of humanity.
