2025-08-28 15:56:47 +0000 UTCSeeing you were doing this made me finally jump in on the patreon. Great show. Everyone in it is good, but Anna Sawai is something else entirely. Not seeing it elsewhere in the comments, so forgive me if it's repetitive! First season of this show is based on the book from the 70s. The specific events depicted didn't happen, but the characters are (largely) drawn from real historical people, and the political situation and larger scale events mostly are correct. The book actually holds up pretty well--it's not perfect, and it definitely suffers from an overly exoticized depiction of Japan (i.e., Orientalism), but you can tell it was done with genuine affection and respect. The show isn't 1:1 to the book, but it's pretty faithful. They're making a season 2, but that will be a wholly invented story for the show, because they did the whole book with this season. You can round off the Catholic/Protestant thing with Say Nothing--recent limited series based on the massively acclaimed nonfiction book. Unflinching look at the Troubles packaged in a sort of murder mystery. Really really good. Monster acting across the board.

The Japanese they're speaking is full of archaic words and forms and regional differences too –I find I can hear it to some extent with all the modern Japanese I've heard watching anime 🙃

I’ve been trying to stay reminded of the stoicism that protects Mariko’s heart, “the eight-fold fence,” which I think could put current events in some bearable perspective. But maybe first you also need to be able to sweep in and out of a room like Mariko. Boss!
