Wow thank you for sharing this Amanda

I'm way behind on your catalog Frank, but I had to comment here with my little anecdote. I went to a talk Lance Henriksen did at Dragoncon many years ago (I think it was 2008) and had the opportunity to ask him a question in the Q&A. I asked what he used as inspiration for Bishop, since when Aliens was made there had been practically no film depictions of emotional, sympathetic androids (with the notable exception of Blade Runner). He broke my heart a little when he explained that Bishop was basically him as a child. He had grown up tossed between unfortunate foster home situations and always found himself trying to placate, please, and show deference to everyone around him to stay safe. He also talked about how he had very little formal schooling and was functionally illiterate until he taught himself to read as an adult to read movie scripts for auditions. He's an intriguing person and I've always loved seeing him pop up when I least expect it. Btw, if you haven't seen Blade Runner you should absolutely put it on your list. One of my top films of all time that absolutely holds up in its impact 40+ years later.

Glad you enjoyed my friend I don't know where all those comments came from, But they just felt appropriate in the moment 😂

It was a pleasure watched one of my favorites movie again with you Frank🙂 Yes, Ripley is in third part! Also "Quinn B and her husbands", "skinny ass legs" and "bitch slap" killed me🤣

Julita Piotrowska

Soccer mom Ripley driving in to pick the kids up in the minivan. “Stop playing with your friends and just get in the damn truck!”

On director's cuts; I think they are often over-hyped, theatrical cuts are "fine". However, there are only a couple of directors who i think were able to improve their films with their extended/director's cuts; James Cameron (Dir. Aliens) is one of them and Ridley Scott (Dir. Alien), the other. If I watch the theatrical release of Ridley's Scott's films like Alien, Blade Runner, and Kingdom of Heaven I feel the absence of the "missing" material. In the case of Kingdom of Heaven, it took me from having a marked dislike for the film to making it one of my favorite Ridley Scott movies, closer to being on par with the likes of Gladiator. Jame Cameron's extended cuts of Terminator 2 and Aliens feel more self-indulgent but bring some depth/background that serves the story. Just often at the cost of pacing. Something to keep in mind next time you have choice between versions. Aliens directors cut is worth the extra 2 or three scenes that are added; I never felt the added run time. Edit: Now just skip the rest except maybe Romulus. I like Alien 3 and it is an early David Fincher film ( director of Seven, Fight Club, Social Network, Mindhunters. more) but it isn't very good. Alien 4 is campy and fun but also not every good. The rest are missable. Best of the sequels after this are meh but the least offensive is probably Romulus. They all feel like they are chasing what they think an Alien movie should be instead standing on their own merits. It is the same issue with many of these long running franchises that keep getting sequels or reboots. Except Andor, is better Star Wars than that fan base deserves. Stand alone it is good. And also Star Trek Strange New Worlds to a lesser degree; that show cooks.

Not the back it up Terry 🤣🤣😭🤣

Ripley has exactly one plan to get rid of Xenomorphs and its 100% effective.

I love this movie so hard man. Alien is like, the "better" film because its thematic depth and contributions to horror are incredible. But, if I wanna watch an alien flick, I watch Aliens. It's the perfect blend of horror and action, and it reinforces and strengthens so much of Ripley's character. It's no wonder Sigourney was nominated for an Oscar for this one.

Noct

So excited to watch with you! Aliens was one of the first sequels that most people agreed was better than the first!

One of the things included on the directors cut that I wish they kept in the theatrical version is where we find out Ripley had a daughter and because she was in hyper sleep for 57 years her daughter grew up and died without her mom…that’s why she’s so good with and close to Newt.

Finally finished the stream, I just couldn’t manage watching the whole thing last night. Newt is everything to me. The really solid core of these movies is that human beings love, and the love can drive them to incredible thinking and action and sacrifice. Her trusting Newt’s knowledge of the vents is also wonderful. She knew she didn’t know and she knew this child did, and trusted her, and they survived because of that, and because of Ripley’s determination and resourcefulness. Just perfect. Sigh.

Frank, have you seen the Terminator movies?

Melissa

One of the few strong female characters from this era, so many older women have told me Ripley was their favorite movie hero. Watching it now, i can see why women were empowered by Ripley's combination of bravery, brilliance, and badassedness! She has all that while still retaining her compassion and her ethics. I see why she meant so much to 80s ladies! 😂

Rewatching it, I'm reminded of why I still kind of have a crush on Hicks. He's strong for sure, but he's not a big masculine military bro. He's thoughtful about everything and intentional with his actions. Sure, he didn't handle that first interaction with Newt wonderfully, but he learned from his mistake. He's observant and he listens to Ripley when no one else does. And his little acts of care, like giving her the tracker. That's all beautiful. I'm a sucker for characters like that. I love when Hudson is panicking and Ripley immediately grounds him. She's firm, but nothing else would have reached him in that moment. And she gave him a specific task with clear goals and objectives to give him somewhere to put all the energy in him. It's so empathetic when most of the other characters in leadership positions would have just told him to man up about it. I love the complex portrayals of both masculinity and femininity this movie shows. It's nice to see that in a movie from the 80s.

Lynn Baker

oh hell yeahhh one of my all time favorite movies. big crush on Hicks growing up. and I have so much love for Hudson. Bill Paxton always cracks me up.

Lynn Baker

Please watch Alien: Romulus next, I beg!!!

Lailah Johnson

I've started this movie atleast 4 different times and I've never finished it due to various extern factors. I know this is regarded as one if the greatest sequels in film history and now I think I'll FINALLY be able to watch it start to finish!

Lailah Johnson

Alien 3 was a disappointment for me for a few reasons, it really falls off the brilliance of the first two

Stefan and Erin S

No way, I’m so excited 😍😍😍 my favorite of the franchise
