My stepmom is so much like Marilla lol. If I’d accidentally cut my face or something to the point where it was noticeable and I didn’t want to go out, my mom would have also told me to face the music. I love her, but man, sometimes…. There’s also so much I never noticed about the second episode, specifically how Marilla acts at the very start. She’s almost, in my interpretation anyway, sarcastically chiding Anne in regards to her disappointment of not being able to go the party. It took me by surprise because Marilla’s known for her dry humor, but not in such a mean-spirited way. You can tell how much her headache is bothering her…

I love Marilla so much, seeing her soften so much for and because of anne ❤️ I first watched this show a few months ago and found out from my mom that as a kid I used to watch the 1980's anne from green gables all the time and I don't remember but kinda cool finding Anne again 💗

I love that it was there for you when you needed it🧡

Watching this episode was so healing for me as a young queer kid (I watched it soon after I came out). The hopeful messaging of this show is one of the reasons it's my favorite. It's realistic about the past, but not so bleak that is makes queer people feel there will never be happiness. It makes me so emotional

That is a fire hazard waiting to happen Absolutely, I want all the food. It's a theme for sure . I'm a big foodie. Plus, half the time when I'm recording these reactions, I'm probably fasting or just extremely hungry. So yes I definitely want some hehe You're very welcome💛🧡🩵 I commend your discipline, I would have packed at least 12 easy!!!

Franklin

. I feel you, I don't think I can picture another Matthew and Marilla

Franklin

OMG thank you

Franklin

Actual candles on a Christmas tree is crazy business. I'm starting to notice a theme: Every time food is on the screen, Frank wants to partake. 😂😂 I don't blame you! 1:18 Thank you for the words. You brought tears to my eyes. P.S. I'll have you know that while I watched the end of these episodes with you, I ate FOUR Oreos. Only four. It was painful. LOL

So much crying in this one!! I love the dynamics of the Cuthberts so much. Can we talk about how wonderful Mariila and Mathews' actors are? They are so real, so believable, so raw. Mathew's character is so understated and subtle but he does such a good job at revealing his emotions without even talking. This is the reason why I prefer this version over any other, I think these are the best Mathew and Marilla we've ever had!

The original novel certainly doesn't go into that, *but* L M Montgomery, the author, was a queer woman. She was closeted, as was the time, but she had intense crushes on her female friends, most notably Nora Lefurgey, and wrote very sentimental letters to her about how she didn't really want to marry her fiancé and felt that "his touch repulses me" and that "I wish that instead of writing to you I could get my arms around you and kiss you" (you know, as friends!). She wrote love poems to girls in her class, but people assumed she gave them so they could give them to boys. She had a woman "living and traveling companion" for more than a decade, named Frederica... I strongly suspect she would have liked the new expansion of the series.

FUCK YES queer and trans and gender nonconforming folks have always and will always be here !!!! I wasn't expecting to get a window into that in this series, makes me so happy 💖 Must have pissed off some fans of the original novels but it seems to me like a very appropriate place to take the misfit theme. I was sitting here hoping so hard Cole would run into someone to expand his POV on art! YAAAAS boy get some clay 🙌 I wish more conversations about possibility (in art and anti-normativity) had found me when I was that young. It took me so long to find my way to them later.

Jerry song translator at your service :D I'm underqualified but glad to supplement what my French lacks with a bit of research. I love Jerry and it's interesting learning about these old songs! This one was "V'la le Bon Vent" (Here Comes the Good Wind) which is a one of many variants on a traditional folk song about 3 ducks. The song describes the good and lovely wind and the narrator's pond where 3 beautiful ducks swim. The King's son goes hunting with his beautiful silver rifle, aims at the black duck and kills the white one. The narrator calls the son wicked and describes the duck's death extravagantly– losing blood from under its wing, pouring diamonds from its eyes and gold and silver from its beak, feathers flying in the wind to be gathered by 3 ladies to make a bed for all who pass by.

Anne's hair really does look good short! Her ears are so cute. Def would've been freakish for the time though :/

You sure said it, episode 7 is healing <3

Found a tidbit! The line "someone will remember us, even in another time" is a line by the poet Sappho of Lesbos, whose love for women is indeed remembered thousands of years later!

Lola Lirola

I should be explicit: Your commentary, your perceptiveness, and everyone's openness and sharing in the comments is what makes this such a special place! I really like this show on its own, but I absolutely *love* watching it here, it's ten times better.

Lola Lirola

I don't really have much to comment on these episodes except that (re)watching them here with you and among friends really makes my week better. I always leave energized and restored in my soul.

What was always wonderful about books such as Anne of Green Gables was that it met people where they were and took them to places they never been or thought, it allowed for interpersonal growth and healing for so many of my generation who were taught to be the punctually master cookie cutter worker bees to never question beyond the standards taught beyond the pew of a church or the hard seats and benches of school. I was so waiting for this part to come, for it is this part of the story that touched me the most as a young girl, the ball and all its glories like a pebble in a pond that ripple throughout so many lives touched from the past to present into the future.

YEP that first interaction with the whole family and Sebastian always has me reacting one of two ways: 1. Face in my hands barely able to look, or 2. Audibly squealing with discomfort :') An interesting encounter to be sure

Lauren O'Loughlin
