Watching Sophia come out of that barn and Rick having to end her. I will never be able to watch that with a dry eye. =(

In retrospect, I was mad as hell at myself for not once considering that Sophia could be in the barn. Not for a moment.

100% agree. And oftentimes, you see a lot of sense in works the bad guys are saying, even if it's just like 20%. really good conflict writing

Thanks for recommending this. I'll look it up
I don't think so. I don't know how that would work, or if the community here would have much interest in a reaction that is not TV / movies

The fact that Lori told him about her and Shane, and Rick keeps giving him plenty of opportunities to confess and he says nothing is standing out to Rick i think

Curious whether you've seen 28 Days Later? If not I'd love to see a reaction to that. I think you'd really enjoy it. People say the first scene of it is similar to the first scene of this show, but of course 28 Days is the OG.

God as soon as those two guys walked into the bar I knew some shit was going to go down I just couldn’t remember what, but yep it was Rick being a badass 🥰 I love him, and for all the reasons these two eps demonstrated. Anyway, I love ALL of your yapping!! Never stop!! And I would watch the shit out of you doing a stand-alone video on masculinity in the walking dead. That would be amazing 👀

Griefy episodes.
A resource I revisit again and again is the Ologies podcast episode by Alie Ward called "Thanatology: NEW Interview (GRIEF & MOURNING) with Cole Imperi" - highly recommend for anyone going through it <3
Would you ever do a reaction to a podcast episode Frank? I'd love that cross-over

The thing I love about the early seasons of this show is that the “bad guys” are always right in their own eyes and what they do could be understood by the audience. Shane opening the barn is insane to many, but by his standards he WAS protecting everyone.
Hershel’s anger at the group might feel unfair but to him, he’s in the right.
Even Dave at the end! He’s just trying to survive. There isn’t anyone truly despicably evil—not right now and I really appreciated that about TWD. It gave the audience time to think about what THEY would do in the situation. Amazing writing🧡

Agree! And he had so many other great performances in his filmography, like Dead Man Walking (not about zombies}, In the Heat of the Night, Monster. I was saddened when he passed back in 2018. RIP Scott.

You gave your own absolutely EXCELLENT Ted Talk on the portrayal of toxic masculinity in this show! Loved it!! That's a subject I could spend hours discussing myself as well (not just how it relates to TWD, of course) (tbh, I could spend quite a few on that too tho lol). I especially liked your comparison of the different types of men depicted in the show vs. Shane. I've seen other reactors who are really on Shane's side. But that's wild to me, because I feel like the show is very loudly broadcasting, "THIS GUY IS BAD NEWS, Y'ALL!" 😂 So it's refreshing to see someone else, particularly a male reactor, GET it (of course, I wouldn't expect anything different from you tbh 😊).
You mentioned that you could imagine making a video about the subject, and just want to say, if you ever start making videos discussing topics like that, I will most definitely watch!
Also I LOVE in your rewatch post, you said that your wife clocked Shane right away!! 😂😂😂I totally did too, I couldn't staaaand him from that very first scene of him and Rick in the patrol car. Just like Dale, I've known too many men like him, and he had my feminist spidey senses tingling! But in general, he really does embody toxic masculinity in almost everything he does, not just the obvious things. Like the way he rarely speaks in just a conversational tone, but instead everything he says sounds like a challenge. Or like how he's constantly keeping score on things, saying how much better/stronger/more valuable he is than others. Another thing I notice with multiple watches is that he will start getting tense or flat out upset when someone else is calling the shots and he's not in charge, even just in the background sometimes. Like so much patriarchy/masculinity baggage, his seems to stim from the need to be in control.

I find Scott Wilson’s performance as Herschel’s worldview just collapses around him so captivating. As the barn empties, as the shots ring out, and in the scenes that follow, he just nails every nuance.

Great reaction and commentary! It was interesting to hear your looping the misogynist and misogynoir dynamics of some male-directed self-help influencers to Shane's blend of pragmatism, strength and toxicity. I could totally see Shane being that type of influencer if given the platform! It also reminds me of what an amazing actor Jon Bernthal is. He presents as such a decent, cool guy in his public persona and hosts a great podcast called "Real Ones"- interesting conversations with guests from various walks of life.

I forgot to mention that I always wondered why Sophia was not taken down and eaten when a walker found her since she is smaller. Seeing her walk from the barn told me she somehow managed to fight off a walker after being bitten and she must have been so frightened that she could not find her way back to the group when they were still parked on the side of the highway.

Such an emotional gut-punch. And a clear delineation between two kinds of courage: Shane’s, which is motivated by selfishness and bravado, and Rick’s, motivated by community and compassion.
Shane is happy to make Herschel and his daughters witness the slaughter of their own kin, but when Sophia emerges from the barn and the narrative suddenly includes someone from his own group, he is not the one who steps up. It falls to Rick to perform the difficult act of eliminating one of their own.
IMO, Shane is the “America First” dude who gives no fucks about anyone not personally connected to him. And it’s been sad to see a few reactors view him as the hero, while Rick’s reason and compassion make him “weak.”

I felt the events of Ep. 7 changed the tone of the show with the reveal that the group's search for Sophia was in vain, the deepening divide between Rick and Shane's methods of handling things, and Carol's deep despair upon seeing her undead daughter.
Despite all the tragic things that have happened from the beginning of this series, the barn shootout revealing that Sophia has been dead all along was the most unexpected and horrifying thing for me...up to this point that is! 😮 The shocking look on everyone's faces and Rick and Daryl finding out the hard way that their optimism regarding Sophia's fate was misplaced. I could feel Carol's loss, her gut wrenching grief.
Hershel saying "You people are like a plague! I do the Christian thing, give you shelter, and you destroy it all!" Hershel blames Rick and his group for destroying the peace at the farm and I can't say I blame him for that part. Also the reveal that Hershel was a drinker, although he hasn't touched a drop since the day Maggie was born was interesting. Watching his undead wife and stepson get gunned down in front of him is enough for him to fall off the wagon.
The bar scene, the first time I saw it, I was holding my breath after Tony and Dave arrived. Tony's casual misogyny with his disgusting words, peeing on the floor, you know he and Dave are not as harmless as they try to make out. It was great that Dave and Tony provided a common foe for Rick and Hershel to unite against. By shooting the possibly dangerous invaders who would not take no for an answer, Rick demonstrated that he is invested in protecting the farm and the people living on it. Loved it after Rick has already shot Tony twice, he still makes a point to give him a final tap to the head.

I always feel like I'm typing about Daryl too much, but that moment with Carol in the stable was so important. Daryl was searching for Sophia because he was once a kid alone in the woods, but no one came looking for him, no one even noticed he was gone. For him, it was like healing his inner child by being the one to look for her. When Carol essentially gives up by saying they might not find her, it hurts him because he thought she was different from his dad and brother, that she cared about her child and wouldn't give up on her. He apologized because he realized he was projecting and ended up taking his anger toward his family out on her in that moment.
Carol and Daryl's hearts are drawn to each other because they both have a trauma those without it wouldn't understand. Part of the reason I was super against the idea of them being together romantically with all the implication that they might is because they are too similar. Both of them can help each other heal as friends who understand each other's pain, but that might not be what they need in a partner.

You also made me think about killing the walkers. Honestly, while the primary motivation is to protect the living, I believe it is putting them out of their misery, too. We know that human part of their brain is dead. They're like husks with no feeling only the survival instinct to feed. It's a kindness to kill them. I never really thought of it that way bc most of the ones they come across are strangers not people they know. It reminds me of Sinners -- I don't want to spoil anyone, so I'll just say Annie. I think you'll get my point.

The brilliance of the writing to have them massacre what was Hershel's family and friends (which they had to do) to prove they aren't human . . . and THEN . . . out walks Sophia, a child, someone they knew, loved/cared about. It's narrative perfection IMO. I remembered Sophia was found as a walker, but I didn't remember how it was revealed until the barn opening started. I'm so glad no one spoiled it for you.
P.S. I typed this comment before you also said it was perfection. Great minds. :)
