THANK YOU!!! ANYONE would need a little comfort in that time. ANYONE. But you know some men just love to hate women. it's why they worship Walter- a character who was specifically made to go from your average Joe to a truly merciless killer- but HATE Skylar, his wife, for... reasons. Because she's annoying? Because once she found out he had been lying to her for years and that he's a murderous drug kingpin and separated from him, she had the audacity to.... find comfort in another man? It's so enraging.

I can't shut my brain off. We found out that the brain stem is the only active part of the zombies brain back at the CDC. So how is any headshot, especially just the frontal lobe an effective kill??

Dale gets a lot of flack from the fandom. He's been in just about every Frank Darabont project I've seen and I love the actor and the character. I was already a grandma when this show started and Dale gave me someone I could relate to. He calls it like he sees it, be him right or wrong, he doesn't go talking behind your back. I love that he confronted Lori and Shane in this episode and what he told both of them was true.

With hindsight of the entire series, it's hard for me to put my dislike of Lori into perspective on rewatch. If you remember, Jim told her to keep Carl at her side and never out of sight. He was right and yet she leaves him all the time. Shane blew it with me when he tried to force himself on Lori at the CDC. I don't care if he was drunk. Inexcusable. But Lori not telling Rick that she's been sleeping with Shane is not okay. You know others in the group know what's been going on. She is making a fool out of her husband at this point. Not telling the truth is lying.

Ep 5. The GASP I gusped when Andrea took that shot!!! Despite all the jump-scares was truly the most shocking thing to me. Team Daryll
Chuckling to yourself about a happy ending so funny
Ep 6. Two things I've been reading recently put all this baby talk in a new light.
One is Beloved by Toni Morrison, where the main character Sethe recalls how beautiful the trees were on the plantation she escaped from and wonders whether hell is also beautiful. She loves her grown children but is haunted by the spirit of the baby daughter she killed rather than allowing her to become enslaved.
The second is a poem I saw recently - Good Bones by Maggie Smith, from Poetry Foundation website:
"Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful."
...None of us can make these choices for anyone but ourselves

And that right there is the issue. Yes, female characters are poorly written by a lot of writers, and those writers should definitely receive those critiques. My point is that the female characters are used as a diving board to spew misogyny. Fans and viewers can objectively critique a female character without resulting in the deprecation of women.
And most of the time, the female characters and the real-life actresses are the ones who get a smear campaign, instead of the often male writers who wrote them very poorly. Look at what is going on with Bella Ramsey right now. I blame misogyny because that large part of the fan base often never come for the men who are also written poorly

I think Lori chose quite decisively that no matter who the biological father was–the dad that would raise that baby would be Rick. And no matter how it'd play out, Rick would respect that and be more than willing to be involved that way. Never was a Lori hater, but as a young teen first watching this series, I only ever saw it from Shane's perspective or a more patriarchal view. Crazy I ever did that. Now re-watching through your lens and my own adult one years later...it's like of course....Lori isn't a villain at at all!! Just a woman trying her best under the circumstances :( and I'm still so compelled by both Shane and Rick, but in this situation it's like...you gotta respect her decisions, be open to what that might entail in this terrifying scenario. Also, s/o to Glenn, he's a real one with a heart of gold.

Frank, THANK YOU for understanding the choices that Lori has made. You’re the only male viewer of this series that I’ve ever heard defend this character. And btw, there are more than a few women who have embraced patriarchy so much, they hate Lori’s character without even seeming to know why.

One thing the group knew that Herschel didn’t, is what the scientist at CDC showed them - the entire brain dying, and then a rekindling of new activity but only in the most primitive portion of the brain, the one that pretty much just controls motor functions. Maybe Herschel doesn’t know that the barn people died completely , and the part of them that resurrected has no memory, emotion, sadness, or fear. That is the best explanation for why the walkers are not human.

This is where I blame audiences less for being misogynistic and blame the writers instead. Andrea IS annoying. Her decisions can be grating. We can’t blame audiences for feeling like “all these women are on their periods” as the writers made Glenn say. They wrote shitty characters because they obviously couldn’t make women as likable as men. Men wrote women how they saw them, then we blame ourselves for feeling what they’ve told us to feel. I think there’s grace to be found all around.

I think Lori's quick reaction to knowing it was Rick's baby is more her saying regardless of who the father really is it will be Rick's. That's how I took it. On my first watch I was a Lori hater lol. I'm trying to be more compassionate this time around, but it's just annoying how naive she was thinking Shane was going to walk away from them just because Rick was back. That man probably has been eyeing her way before all this happened.

Ep. 6 Indeed you are correct, this show is good at set-ups. And your guesses are on the mark, Frank!
Hershel saying that Rick is a man of conscience, but are you sure about everyone in the group? He knows what Shane did to Otis, without even being told...it's the kind of energy Shane gives off. Dale knows too and that is why he wants Shane to leave the group.
As wrong as it was for Lori to keep her morning-after pills hidden from Rick while chastising him for his secrecy, she does have a point when she tells Rick the reason why she wanted to previously abort her pregnancy was because it's too dangerous to bring a baby into a world filled with walkers. I hate to say this, but an infant would be a light snack for a walker.
So a big question is "Who's Your Daddy?" Lori is adamant that Rick is the father of her baby, despite the fact that it's equally likely to be Shane. Time will tell!!
"You were't supposed to see this" Loved your reaction to that statement by Maggie!
It is very sad that Hershel believes that the walkers are sick people who can be cured and that Rick's group are barbaric for killing them. He refuses to listen when Dale attempts to explain why keeping them in a barn might not be such a good idea. But we now know that in that barn is Mom. Shawn. Mr and Mrs Fisher. Lacey. Duncan...how very sad for him and his family. And now we see that Glenn practically decapitates the walker in the pharmacy, but it keeps on coming until he succeeds in inflicting actual brain damage. Gotta go for the brain!

As usual enjoying your reactions and comments! Flashback in beginning of Ep. 5 makes me think of "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" which is a famous quote from the 1979 film Apocalypse Now....very good film and worth watching! I still get a good laugh, Daryl for his belief in the chupacabra, yet he does point out that not so long ago the idea of the dead rising to feed on the living would have seemed a little ridiculous too. 😮 So touching when Carol kisses Daryl on the cheek and notes that he did more for Sophia than her dead husband Ed ever managed. In this episode I feel like it's implied that Daryl feels guilty for putting so much energy into searching or Sophia when he didn't look harder for Merle and here he is, still with the people partially responsible for his brother's fate. Looking forward to catchng up with Ep. 6 later today.

nah but even after several rewatches Ana Lucia was terrible (or maybe I think Michelle Rodriguez was just a bad actress). There rest I now sympathize with.

There are so many female characters in media around this time (late 2000’s/early 2010’s) that are villainized for simply being complex women. For having emotions and flaws. Lori and Andrea are a few examples in this show. And so is Skyler White from breaking bad and Ana Lucia Cortez from Lost. Women that don’t roll over in distress when things go wrong. Women who have strong reactions to tragedy. Women who make bad decisions with good intentions.
Men (and women) hated these characters because they are “abrasive”. Theyre “annoying” but they’re REAL women and the internalized and open misogyny at that time was so evident in these characters who did their best with what they could—but because they are women, they’re hated. It’s wild to me.

Also - okay, so I haven't watched this show since it first aired, so I remember very little of it. However - in one of the previous episodes, the camera sort of panned over and lingered on the barn, and I was like - OH! Oh shit, I remember what's gonna happen - and then over the next couple of episodes it was so interesting to see how many times the camera lingers on the barn, or they show one of the family members looking anxiously at the barn. And then also the scene at the well, when Maggie reacts so strongly to them killing that walker - and they're all basically like, haven't you seen this before 100 times? *awkward silence* It's done so well.

I also was one of those who hated Lori when I first watched the show, but I was a little girl in middle school when it premiered. I had a lot of internalized misogyny I hadn't worked through yet. Now I see her as she is, just a woman trying to make difficult decisions in an impossible scenario. Her and Rick's relationship is so strong and is a good model for those learning to communicate with each other better, they each have what the other needs.
On the subject of Maggie, I feel like she was stressed about almost dying and realizing that was Glenn's normal, but she is also a conservative Christian in rural Georgia. She probably has heavy "pro-life" opinions and the idea of assisting someone with what she might view as "murder" without knowing probably goes against her moral foundation as well. I think of it like someone asking you to buy zip-ties for them and you think they just need it for a project, but they're actually using it to kidnap someone, but also you risked your life getting them by almost getting in a wreck on the way. Seeing it from that point of view, her blow-up makes sense, though I, of course, do not share that forced birth mentality.

The ear necklace wasn't a trophy, it was to mask his scent like they did with the guts in Atlanta. Daryl knew he couldn't keep defending himself from walkers in the state he was in, so he did the smartest thing he could with the knowledge he had. Super resourceful. I remember being so worried they were gonna go and kill my favorite off only a few episodes into the second season. 😭Bro had all my respect by this point.

the delivery was harsh but maggie blowing up at lori made sense to me - she cares about glenn and i’m sorry but someone else could’ve gone down that well but they all immediately looked at glenn as if his life wasn’t at stake and it was some game. no one even pretended to volunteer. she went on this run with him even while mad so he’d have back up, just like he did for her last time (i’m glad someone’s actively looking out for my boy!! as we saw with daryl, as capable as someone is something can go wrong quickly)
also for all maggie knows / assumes, lori’s husband already knows about this but they've decided (yet again) to ask glenn to risk his life instead

In terms of who is the father, I think Rick and Lori were together in the tent the night he reunited with them all, if I remember correctly? So I think she was actually intimate with both Shane and Rick maybe like a day apart of one another 😬😬

Despite what people often think, if you've been stabbed or impaled - unless you are in a position where you can be completely still until someone can take it out for you - it is actually better to take it out. Something inside of you like that is just going to continue ripping up your insides and causing more damage if you keep moving around. (I learned this from people commenting on a reaction I saw of a particular episode of TLOU season 1 - no spoilers, anyone.)
