“Unclouded my conscience, remorse or delusions of morality.” Decades later, it was elected to high office.

True true

That time a woman warned everybody about Armageddon and got overruled.

Susan B

A favorite thing about this film is that space travel by their time has become a blue-collar job. These astronauts aren’t explorers or adventurers; they are long-haul truckers. That gave Alien a sense of realism.

Susan B

No doubt. We'll see. Thank you for watching

Franklin

finally got to see this reaction and did not disappoint!!! hope you do the more recent films in the aiien franchise sometime down the line bc despite the mixed rep they get, i think tney're def crafted in a meaningful way. more lore, but also risk that i think you'd appreciate!!

Latte

😂😂 weird ass robot

Franklin

‘Squirting out milk?!’ lol

Devon Michelle

With teeth😆😆😆 You describing the environment just took me back to simpler days

Franklin

That is so interesting. The subtext

Franklin

Thanks Kim

Franklin

Oh shit. I love when directors do that

Franklin

The funniest part about the chest burster scene is that none of the other actors were told what would happen to Kane. So their reactions are actually real, very cool.

Devon Michelle

Your comments and reactions...perfect!. No matter how many times I see this movie, I really enjoy it. The character Kane who you see rise first from the pods...is actor John Vincent Hurt, may he rest in peace, 2017. He is noted to be one of stage, screen and TV's finest transatlantic talents. Can easily recognize his slightly gravel-voice as well when he is in disguise. He has a rich film history. Be sure to check out his role in the film The Elephant Man -1980. It is based on a true story which is gut-wrenching. Another powerful film he is in is Midnight Express-1978...it is definintely worth a watch.

I love scifi for how it allows art to explore social topics. It is impossible to watch this movie without dealing with gender politics. It is, after all, a "pregnant man" story! So you weren't off at all when you talked about unsolicited dick pics and how necessary the underwear scene really is. Even when people try to only focus on the action, they end up actually talking about gender dynamics. It is also a movie conceived and filmed at the height of second-wave feminism, so having a dick-looking alien(*) that secretes dangerous bodily fluids, stalking and assaulting a predominantly male crew, and using their bodies to breed, is trying to contribute to that conversation, for sure. (*) Except in the facehugger stage, that one is decidedly vulva-coded! 😅 I had never seen the Director's cut, I found it slower than the theatrical. Definitely watch Aliens (one of the legendary best sequels of all time), and then Alien Romulus!! Skip the rest, honestly.

Lola Lirola

The only thing that bothers me about it is, why are the panties so SMALL? It gives me anxiety, lol. Like imagine going through all the shit she's going through and her underwear isn't even covering her butt. That's the REAL horror.😳

Alva

My man! When you referred to the chest explosion scene with “is this like getting an unsolicited dick pic?”, I about lost it! 😂 It absolutely is…with TEETH!!! 🤣 Alien, imho, has aged well. I was 21 when it came out and about to graduate from college with an engineering degree. No one owned a computer that wasn’t room-sized. Phones were still corded and plugged into the wall. And you had to get out of your chair to change the channel to one of the other 4 choices on the tv. There was no cgi, the director had to feed suggestions to your imagination to fill in the horror… Alien is the OG. Aliens is even better. I hope it makes the cut soon!

Kendall P

My interpretation of the clothes situation is vulnerability and having your guard down; it's a visual way of saying "and now that part is done", or signaling "the threat is not here and I am alone". Which is interesting to me because 1) it's not particularly sexy, in movement or in style like it often is in gratuitous ways in media and 2) the changing of it can inform the understanding of the emotion of the character before and after.

Franklin

haha thanks for sharing that story. The way he described it I can see how that poster terrified you

Franklin

Much love. I like me a good video essay, just added it to my watch later playlist

No one listening to the brother and no one listening to the woman. Hello, 1979.

Melissa

When other sci-fi tries to be scary or grounded they are basically biting off of Alien (1979, Dir. Ridley Scott) and Aliens (1986, Dir. James Cameron). There are some other influences but those 2 kind dominated what folks thought for grounded alien movies. Slide in some Silent Running, Star Wars, Kubrick's 2001, and The Thing (1982), and even a sprinkle of Bladerunner and you can see how they still influence stuff now. You aren't being to hard on them but something to keep in mind is that these folks aren't "Astronauts" the way we have them now. Astronauts now have to be pretty exceptioonal. The crew of the Nostromo are just a bunch of corporate employee for a mining operation. They have no training in first contact and I don;t think extraterrestrial life exists in this world on a meaningful level. They are more like merchant marine or oil rig workers than astronauts; highly skilled at their job but in not necessarily tight mentally or socially. Dead Space doesn't exist without Alien pretty much. There is a whole tone and viisual style that comes from Alien and Aliens. The first one had to lean more an atmosphere because they didn't have advanced enough even make up effects to have teh alien not be super cheesy. I like that they show it very little and they do it is very stylized. By modern standards it may seem bad but I think much of the heavy CG stuff that has come out over the last 30-40 years looks bad and it doesn't even have an excuse of not having the tech; just no style and kind of artless spectacle. The background when the ship was landing wasn't computer graphics, at this point CG was too primitive for even that. Most likely a practical model was comped into a blue screen shot where they had a matte painting done to replace the background star field. I think that still classifies as an "in camera effect" because they basically combining the information in 2 film cells into one frame to create a complete image. 2001 (1968), Silent Running in (1972) has similar effects which were used for years, and eventually Star Wars (1977) came in and advanced it way more with their motion control camera rig where they could replicate the shots much easier. Star Wars ina way made Alien a possibility. Just liek movie studios now, when some hits it big, tehy want to replicate it so they can cash in and for a time, it will open up funding and mindset. There were a lot of films like Alien that go greenlit in the wake of Star Wars, some hist but so many misses. Lucas founded ILM out of the work they did on Star Wars and spun it off into it's own entity that persists nearly 50 years later. ILM changed teh FX game, and many folks who spun off from ILM created the FX houses that made every cool movie since.

Franklin

Yeah I think I saw some of the marketing for Romulus and that shit looked good

Franklin

I love this film so much. Excited to watch it again for the first time in years.

Lailah Johnson

Omg, what a cool surprise!! Gonna have to enjoy this tomorrow, because it's 2 am here now, but I remember when this movie opened I was a kid, and I never saw it, but they had the poster of it at a family restaurant we used to go to, and just the poster *terrified* me! It was on the staircase that went down to the toilets in the dark, and there was just an egg beginning to crack, and then the movie tagline written on it was "In space, nobody can hear you scream" 😱🫣😱 I was so scared to go near it! I finally saw the movie when I was 28. It's a great movie!

Lola Lirola
