2025-02-12 22:27:05 +0000 UTCIt’s pretty clear in the film, but the reason fish die around Godzilla and the power of his atomic breath is because he is radioactive. Godzilla was created in response to Japanese fears of the Atomic bomb. He’s sort of this specter of the fear in Japan of nuclear weapons and the horror of the destruction inflicted on the country. Thematically, Godzilla represents the war haunting Koichi and the other soldiers who survived. Instead of fighting it to the death as they did in WWII, they resolve to live and overcome this symbol of fear and suffering. It’s such an amazing story that speaks to the original creation of Godzilla and its cultural origins, way better than any of the American remakes ever did.

2025-02-12 19:40:40 +0000 UTCI knew this won an Academy award for best visual effects last year but wasn't sure I'd enjoy it because I haven't liked any of the other Godzilla films or other modern monster movies. I was very pleasantly surprised by it, so thank you Frank! Not sure if it was because of the Japanese cast & post war setting, but it felt more grounded and the stakes felt higher. All the post war trauma particularly the post nuclear fallout out trauma was at the heart of this film. But for sheer movie fun ride enjoyment I especially liked the way they filmed that first night time attack on the Island. It seemed to be a homage to Jurassic Park by the smaller more T-Rex size Godzilla. Interesting to note that while Japan had it's own native monstrous creation (sins?) in the original Godzilla, but that it's extreme growth, radiation spewing death ray powers and aggressiveness towards humans only happened after American nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific.

I just want to point out after the Ginza attack, the voice over radio broadcast mentions godzilla shed scales all over the city during the attack. so I believe the stuff on Noriko’s neck at the end is meant to allude to some of Godzilla’s dna mingling with hers thus aiding her healing from that catastrophic damage!
