Episode 13 is genuinely fascinating because you get to see Hannibal have something not go his way. People often say the way he acted shows he doesn’t love will nor Abigail, but in fact, him attempting to kill both of them shows that he cared as much as he could. If I didn’t love them, he would have been much more calculating when it came to their deaths. However, his final crime in the season was a crime of passion, which we so rarely see him commit.

The fact that you see "Hannibal" wounded on the table at the end. Because he was hurt by Will. The last episode is ART. PS: Even if they die by bleeding (which we don't know) note that he *didn't kill everybody. He only killed Abigail. She was a gift for Will, they were going to be a family. And Hannibal leaves his house and sees Alana alive and doesn't kill her. This was passional. And for Hannibal, that is a big game changer.

Mizumono is possibly one of THE greatest hours of television ever written, acted, and presented (to me, atleast). The way everything unfolds? The way you can feel Hannibal's love for Will (as he imagines a future for them together as the only two who truly understand each other) morph into heartbreak (as he realises the betrayal - not that Will told Jack, but that Will was NOT honest on who they ate together) which then morphs into almost-petty bitterness (as he cuts both Will and Abigail thus destroying the only sense of family he's ever created for himself)? Even the way he takes Will's jacket off Alana as he walks away, almost as if he can't NOT stop himself from carrying a piece of Will with him? CINEMA.

i know that there is underlying tones to the sexual nature of their relationship, but I've always viewed it primarily as romantic. Mind you, this is a relationship between two people who think VERY differently than regular people. Even with the sexual points, it isn't lust and the romance isn't in your face just like almost everything in this show. It's romantic in THEIR eyes. My favorite relationships in media are the platonic ones and absolutely LOVE when they are the most important relationship and get to be center stage, but even with my bias I wasn't convinced that this wasn't meant to be romantic. It's hard to put into words, but you really notice it more and more the more you rewatch it and understand the character's motives and personalities because trust me, no matter how much you think you understand, there is TONS more.

This finale is literally one of the best episodes I’ve ever seen. The mounting tension, the ticking clock in the entire episode, the final confrontation. Chefs kiss.

I love the last episode soooo much. It did make me laugh that you stopped it to say you didn’t see anything romantic between Will and Hannibal at that particular point. Because I agree that it doesn’t really lean that far into it until the last episode. But Hannibal writing his little fanfic about him and Will being Achilles and Patroclus is so out of pocket - two of the most famous lovers in Greek mythology. And then the last scene between them is when the potential of what they could have been - a real family - is revealed. It’s totally up for interpretation on the dynamics that would have been/ are at play but I think it leans more heavily that way in the last couple of episodes. Anyway. I loved this reaction and I’m so pleased it surprised you so much. It’s such a rollercoaster of an episode.

"If you saw Hannibal like this and Will was a woman, wouldn’t you assume it was a romantic relationship?" That would be heteronormative bias. And I don't mean bias in an insulting way, it's just that unless you are a member of the queer community and/or are accustomed to looking at media through a queer lens, you're not going to be looking for the same cues between two characters of the same sex as you would between two opposite sex characters. Not to mention the fact that there is a long rich history in filmmaking of subtly signaling homoeroticism that most people wouldn't notice at all - for example, men lighting each other's cigarettes by touching the tips as a stand-in for kissing, which they certainly do plenty of in IWTV! I'd recommend watching the documentary The Celluloid Closet to anyone who's curious about this sort of thing; it will really open your eyes to layers of queer storytelling you have never seen before.

It's so interesting what you said about hannibal sleeping with alana to walk in will’s shoes and that through her, he would get a part of will. And I agree. I also noticed that will was unable to think of alana without thinking of hannibal as well (will thinking about hannibal during sex). Hannibal didn’t need to kill alana to take her away from will, he ‘’tainted’’ her by sleeping with her. He made alana another person that will can't separate from hannibal.

Nice! This makes me think.. I think Hannibal took Alana for the purposes of 1. Isolating Will, 2. Build his alibi, 3. Continue to walk in Will’s shoes, 4. Because he knew Will wanted her. And maybe through her, Hannibal would get a part of Will.

I'm sorry always to be this person but the PERFORMANCES! I do not understand how none of the cast members got Emmys for their performances in this show. Mads Mikkelsen is such a powerhouse, the way he radiates power and charisma even when he is playing the most batshit villain ever. the way he makes you feel bad for Hannibal like HE ISN'T THE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED ALL OF THIS! same with Hugh Dancy, the show is stacked with brilliant actors who gave their all!

When Hannibal asks Will if he’ll be forgiven and Will begins to say ‘no’ again and again, my heart just breaks. I weep every time I see the last scene. Hannibal is so hurt. Will is devastated by Hannibal not leaving but… Will, Hannibal gave you a way to avoid this too! This show couldn’t be more of a Greek tragedy, yes!?

..hmmm...never thought Hannibal's gutting of Will as a hysterectomy before..but the allusion is appealing. From fishing to hunting to birthing and becoming; there is a lot of subtextual ground to play in with this bunch. But, maybe comparing the wound to a C-Section would be a better suggestion? I don't know..i mean, Abigail (remade/"given birth to" by Will and Hannibal's influence) was real! She was a killer. All her "fathers" were killers--yes i'm counting Hobbs, too. Murder family, seating for three, indeed.

Hannibal touches Will’s hands when he cleans them, he caresses Will’s face and holds him after he stabs him (penetrates him), he wants them to run away together with their “daughter”, he wants Will all to himself… it’s much more intimate than friendship, Dr/patient, or co-conspirators. If you saw Hannibal like this and Will was a woman, wouldn’t you assume it was a romantic relationship?

This show is amazing at making you feel for hannibal, after everything he has done. Realizing that Hannibal was desperate to be the least hurt one in that kitchen, thinking that Will betrayed him when in reality, Will wanted him to run. Will couldn’t do what he said he would, he couldn’t let him be arrested. The way Hannibal cut him is identical to a hysterectomy, right before killing their surrogate daughter. Reading between the lines in this show is so important, so much symbolism.

I adored that book, even though she omitted the important fact that Patroclus was a quite a warrior himself. Their "friendship" has been debated, since the Classical Age, but was very often seen as romantic. I also find it funny that Hannibal is just hanging out drawing them in some ancient Greek meta fanfic and then proudly shows it to Will. Oh, and Circe by the same author is even better! I highly recommend it, if you haven't already read it. 🙂

In a modern telling "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller -- which I highly recommend -- Achilles & Patroclus have an intimate, romantic relationship. 💚 Interestingly, the book came out 2011 and the second season in 2014. 🤔

Oh, and as far as the romantic undertones of their relationship. On a rewatch you notice them getting more into each other's space; lingering eye contact (remember Will does not do eye contact); the licking of lips, when talking about Will's fantasy of killing Hannibal with his bare hands; Will staring at Hannibal, when Hannibal turns away; and most notably, Hannibal checking out Will's ass, whenever Will turn's around. 🤣

I remember crying so hard at the ending and then laughing, when I noticed that Hannibal took Will's jacket off Alana and wore it as he walked away. And my heart broke, when he offered Will to leave that night and understood his wrath... Because he is Hannibal, not because I think you should go on a killing spree, when someone hurts your feelings. But this is a character, who has never shared himself with anyone. So the betrayal and it's consequent feelings is something he can only process in violence. He is more like Medea than Achilles here. Will did change him. He made him love. And Hannibal can't forgive him that.

This episode is also the perfect example of why Hannibal was my reigning top TV show of all time.. until Interview came around. Everybody on the top of their game in both shows! Writing, music, pacing, acting, camera work, effects all working together like a symphony. I just noticed on this watch that in the early scene of Hannibal opposite Will where there's a tiny bell that rings right as Hannibal blinks. Who else is doing this artistry and attention to detail? Who else besides these two shows turns out a magnum opus every single episode, all bangers and no dull moments?! I should just build a shrine to both of them at this point 😍😍😍

This is probably my top episode of the series. It is such a work of art from start to finish and I really enjoyed revisiting it with you. From the lead up as both Jack and Hannibal are wondering what Will's going to do, to getting to see the full fight scene in its proper context, to the heartbreaking reveal of Abigail, and finally a tearful Hannibal tenderly holding Will as he guts him (shades of Loustat again, but inverted). I used to host Hannibal viewing parties and we were all so traumatized after that one, and then the long slog to see what would happen next. I don't remember when we got the renewal date but I'm pretty sure it wasn't right away. Also, while I know it's entirely inappropriate, your deadpan recap of the characters' probable fates really cracked me up: "Dead. Really dead. INCREDIBLY paralyzed. Super dead." I am sat for you to start in on the final season!

Sorry, I posted my comment about the close captioning error you caught before I saw your post. You are so right about it being unforgiveable in such a critical piece of dialog. I wonder if this can be changed by someone at Amazon? I feel I need to see who they credit the captions with & see if this can be changed at this late date.

Now that you've seen Mizumono, I would like to share some things with you. First, this aired back in 2014 on regular network television with many restrictions and obstacles placed on Bryan Fuller & the writers to not be open about showing homo-erotic relationships, (let alone problematic ones). It didn't have the freedom that IWTV was given on cable 10 years later, so everything about the growing Hannibal/Will attraction and obsession is done through metaphors and certain acting & photography choices. Speaking of photography choices, did you catch the transition of the raindrops turning into blood drops outside on the roof and gutters? The director David Slade, who filmed most of Hannibal's most significant episodes, really showed his genius with this one! Also, Abigail still has one ear left. The ear sent by Will's admirer to the courthouse was removed by the orderly Matthew using Will's stolen knife on the Bailiff he killed while trying to free Will. There were a number of significant captioning errors in the final scenes, most importantly when Hannibal tells Will he gave him the rare gift of letting him know & see him, but that Will didn't want it. Will then answers: "Didn't I?" NOT "damn right" as shown. The pain he inflicted on Will to return the pain he felt from Will's "betrayal", was not just to cut him open, but to echo another Greek tragedy by going full "Medea" on him and killing their "child" Abigail. One last note for you to understand what watching this tragedy was like for original viewers like myself. We had to wait on tender hooks for well over one year to see how Season 3 would handle the aftermath and whether anyone besides Hannibal and Bedeila would even be seen again. I know as an artist yourself, you will appreciate why such a large amount of artwork and beautifully written fanfiction was created to console the pain, as a result.

Great reaction! I don't know why but the last scene often has mistakes in the subtitles which is so annoying in a show like this where dialogue is so important! Hannibal: "I gave you a rare gift. But you didn't want it." Will: "Didn't I?" (Not "damn right") And you are so spot on with Hannibal keeping Abigail as a gift and then taking her away when Will betrayed him.
