2025-01-12 23:51:15 +0000 UTCThe whole James being the butt of every joke and them being so mean about him, is purely based on him being English and the whole history of Ireland and England. It's a big stereotype of Irish people hating English people due to them colonising Ireland, their role in the famine, and causing so much death and destruction etc. In the show they're Catholics who were the minority in Northern Ireland and were persecuted by the Protestants who were generally loyalists and wanted to be part of Britain. The Catholics, or "Fenians" as they sometimes say, wanted independence and to be part of the Republic / "Free State". Gerry is from the "free state"๐

I find it well, balanced in its comedic lens on a very serious ongoing struggle opening up minds through laughter into curiosity to look deeper into the human condition.
