2025-03-23 18:34:45 +0000 UTCThe scariest book and movie I can recall from my youth are Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House, and the black and white 1960s film The Haunting that was based on the novel . This series is more of an homage than an adaptation (a character named Shirley as a nod to the author) but it’s a brilliant one. The subtle terrors are the ones that stick: twisting doorknob; unexplained noise. And the sixties movie ruined metal spiral staircases for me FOREVER.

I too need to watch in a bright room, I've got to get the watch out early in the morning/day--i need to have time to flush the experience from my brain. And even then in the night I've got All my room lights on BLAST---all night. And there * is * a distinction between ghost-scary (which i rarely do), gore/body horror scary (nauseating), and alien/monster-scary (which is more tolerable). I've mastered the between-my- finger viewing method and the glancing side-eye/blurry watching method. If those methods don't work, I keep my player nice and minimized in a corner of the screen with some YouTube bullshit nonsense playing full screen behind it. There was a podcast (can't recall the name) about someone who *hated* horror who started watching horror films and recorded their experience/trauma doing it. Examples of some no-nos or near-nos I've endured using my patented "methods": IT Nightmare on Elm Street Apocalypto Jeepers Creepers Room 14 13 Ghosts The Exorcist

Each scene with Luke is so reminiscent of the pain, the frustration, and the sadness that goes with dealing with an addict but at the same time they are also suffering from an addiction. It's this push and pull and this show captures it so well with the scenes of Luke and Steve and Luke and Shirley at the wedding.

Just not the way you think. A ghost can be a lot of things. A memory, a daydream, a secret. Grief, anger, guilt. But, in my experience, most times they're just what we want to see. Most times, a ghost is a wish.”
