Exactly some of my thoughts throughout the movie as well. I wish there went deeper and didnt rely on subtext or wink wink like you said. At that point it wouldn't be a comedy movie anymore and I don't think the movie would have been successful financially unfortunately. I'm sure this movie received a lot of criticism for some of his messages, I know some would have lost their minds if the movie actually went hard on all the points it was trying to make. Yeah about the changes to Barbieland, initially when I saw some of the women actually loving it - I was getting ready to talk about how unfortunately some people under oppression actually like and go with the flow. But then I noticed it was all the women just brainwashed like you said. I was like "yeah no, it should be way darker than that"

That is so sweet 🧡shout out to your husband. I'll check that out

hehe emphasis on the ''at you"

The last pole was for the next four movies. So that's inglorious bastards, all of us a strangers, and Pan's Labyrinth

Franklin

You're welcome. I think it's a good reminder. All That Glitters Is Not Gold Bus rodent😂 our boy is coming up in the world

Yes yes that shared Joy is important and you're right sometimes we need things to be on the nose, because Lord knows sometimes media literacy seems dead I love that you described it as a trojan horse. And I think comedy is a good vehicle for that. There were definitely some things I wish you were more emphasized and not just relying on subtext. But in general this was great. And that's positive to the world I'll give a little women a look. Thanks Lola

This was such a joy. It's what I remember most from when it was in theaters: the celebration of women and men getting together in pink to have a good time at the theater and just share joy. As a feminist, I have quibbles with some of it (the critiques that it is too on the nose, too 101, too centered on Ken are valid), but given the state of the world... We still need that 101!! Still, I appreciate that you wanted Ken (and the male audience) to learn from this. And I feel the movie is a bit of a Trojan horse: it's about women, but it dedicates a lot of effort to make men see the evils of patriarchy and lose their fears about feminism. It is quite explicitly "preachy", and yet the joy is so infectious, it's a great time and you leave smiling! If you want more from the same director, I really recommend Little Women. It's such a beautiful film. (Without spoiling anything, for those who don't know the book beforehand, I've heard that they felt a bit lost because there's two timelines intertwined, so it helps to look at the lighting: the 'present' timeline is blue toned, and the past timeline is more warm and yellow.)

I think you're right!

I noticed him but at that point, I had gotten tired of pointing out characters I knew from something else. So many it's so fun

I love this movie! Did you notice that one of the Mattel guys with Will Ferrell is also “Bus Rodent” from Fleabag?🤣 I don’t think I have ever recognized so many actors in one movie loll

elena

You are Franough.

There was also a rumor going around when the movie came out that the woman on the bench was either Ruth or her daughter, but it's actually Ann Roth, a legendary Oscar winning costume designer who also did the costume design for this movie.

Rhiannon

Thank you for talking about how patriarchal ideas are damaging for men as well - I think that concept from this movie got past some people, unfortunately. Also, there was another of Fleabag's admirers here - the Mattel CFO was "Bus Rodent" 😂😂 (without the teeth.....)

Rhiannon

That was not the real Ruth Handler. The real Ruth Handler died a long time ago. The actress Rhea Perlman plays her here. Or shall I say plays her ghost. Mattel said her ghost haunts the 17th floor.

Which movie will you watch next? Another from the poll or will there be a whole new poll? 😊

Christina H

“I’ll play guitar at you” is another line that resonated. 😬

Barbie is The Substance as Arrival is to Annihilation. (In my lil world, that is)

Bethany that's me

I love this movie so much, I am so happy that you enjoyed it as well. I had seen it in the theaters and dragged my husband a week later to see it with me. He was incredibly surprised about how much he enjoyed it and before we left the theater, he had ordered the I am kenough sweatshirts for both of us. You should watch Ryan Gosling perform “I’m just Ken” at the Oscars it’s such a fun song.

Elizabeth Schnitzer

I like this movie, I think it’s pretty effective at skewering patriarchy by showing a gender-flipped version of it in Barbieland. I could see it helping some men understand the concept a little more viscerally. That said, I think it was pretty tame in its criticisms. I wish they had gone a bit farther in showing actual harm from the change to patriarchy in Barbieland. Everyone seemed pretty happy, just brainwashed. In the real world, I think most of us are unhappy with gendered expectations, I wish they’d explored that more. The criticism of Mattel fell a little flat to me too. Kinda a *wink* “we know we’re not performing feminism but at least we’re self-aware about it isn’t that funny? We’re not changing anything though.” Left me feeling icky. All that said, I had a lot of fun seeing it in the theater with my friends and the bits where Barbie contemplates the human condition made me cry. “I’m just Ken” is amazing as well.
