I like how you pointed out that Frank and Nick just wanted to make a modest living for themselves. It's a sad indictment on American society that men like that have to turn to crime when the other option is unemployment and poverty. And no shade to just America btw, it's the same all over the Western world with neo-liberal economics.

The money just isn’t there to really protect most people who supply witness testimony. Organizations like Barksdale’s and the Greek’s rely on the threat of violence to keep people quiet and under their thumb. If they don’t deliver on that violence their power unravels pretty quickly. It was interesting to see in this episode Spiros trying to win the Sobotkas’ loyalty with favors instead of violence. I don’t think that’s The Greek’s usual MO, he seems like a “if in doubt, kill them” kinda guy. I think Spiros’ plan was working, Frank went to meet with them, after all. The FBI mole getting that bit of info at just the wrong time was really heartbreaking.

It's not exactly shoved in our face, I guess. He was saying that Nick always looked up to Frank and he (maybe) feels Frank exploited that, since Nick likely would have done whatever he wanted him to. That makes things even sadder. So much regret to go around.
