This is such a wonderful film, painful, but wonderful. Now we need the 2023 musical version! Such a beautiful piece of cinema with some incredible cast members ❤️

I started to watch it, and I was a bit taken aback by the tone/mood being so different. I plan to go back to it. Would you recommend I do?

That is lovely that Shug taught her about physical pleasure. Cause even in the movie that little kiss they shared and how flustered celie was made me so happy because she probably has never felt that good about anything intimate/sexual before.
The Sisterhood is just so heartwarming and beautiful yes. I had no idea that happened to Oprah. She's been fighting her whole life.
I'm so glad I watched this. Have you seen the musical? The new movie?

Shug didn't go back to church. Gods msg was for dad. He didn't realize the seeds he planted in Shug didn't die just bc 'she sang for the devil'. The msg had been tapping for a while. When we lead songs in the choir they're ours 4evr...even IF someone DARES to come after. He couldn't bare her referencing her song bc he couldn't reconcile HIS understanding that ths child wasn't 'saved' so how can she know The Lord & he feel love between thm. Pentecostals shun ppl when they 'backslide'. Spouses & kids r no exception. That's y she said 'I know u cant speak to me...' He referenced Shugs singin 'yards away' as the devil the nite at the juke joint. This parade was a 'come to Jesus moment' for him. Hopefully u get a chance to read or listen to the book. Wayyy more graphic/bisexual. Wypipo disowned Spielberg for platforming Black stories/ppl w ths movie. They got their revenge during award season. The 1st & last time I entertained any of those awards & I was 7yo. Took yrs for him to get back into his ppls graces but he wasn't trying lol. He stood 10 toes dwn w the cast & still does. This is the #1 most quoted project in our culture. I believe it will always be💜For For more of Harpo's aka Oprahs😉 blessed actn... watch her nxt role in 'Beloved'.

Loved the reaction!! (Your excited reaction to seeing young Laurence Fishburne made me wonder if you’ve ever seen What’s Love Got to Do With It? He is amazing in that, alongside Angela Bassett.)

This has legit been in my top 5 movies for yearssssss. I watch every reaction to it on YouTube, and have only been disappointed once. Haven't watched your beast of a reaction yet, but I KNOW I'll enjoy it. I might have a block of 3 hours (😂 😳) available this evening around dinner, and I'm looking forward to it.

Another aspect of the book is the queerness. It is much more clear that Celie is in love with Shug. I don't recall all the details, but I'm fairly certain they become intimate for a period of time during the story. Shug helps to teach Celie how to feel physical pleasure, which is beautiful.
I've seen this film many times. I ALWAYS cry when Celie & Nettie are separated, and I flat out SOB when they're reunited. ❤️🩹
Oprah's scene in the fields when she confronts Celie about telling Harpo to beat her is so intense. She talks about how she had to beat off men her whole life. Oprah has publicly shared she was sexually abused as a child. You can feel her pain coming through in that scene. 😔
Whoopi is a wonder in this movie. I love everything about her portrayal of Celie.
Thank you for sharing your reaction to this. It's one of the best books I've ever read. Oh! In the book, Alice Walker (author) writes it as letters to God, so in the beginning when you hear Celie saying, "Dear God," it's a nod to the book.
I also love the cinematography -- the use of light, shadows, color, angles. Stunning! The score 🎶 is fantastic as well.

In the book, Mister & Shug were a couple who had kids out of wedlock. He wanted to marry her but his father forbade him (which is why Shug called Albert weak & why Old Mister spoke about Shug the way he did when Celie spit in his water). Shug’s parents took her kids from her to raise & shunned her from the church. If you remember, when Shug visited her Dad’s church early in the movie she spoke about his preaching & her singing God’s Tryna Tell You Something with the choir. That young girl singing Gods Tryna Tell You Something at the end was Shug’s daughter.
