What Dreams May Come | Full Length Reaction

Comments

nah nah thank you for writing this long-ass message. I learn a lot from them. I held my tongue in this reaction because I didn't want to say how I really feel about Christianity and some of its views on matters like suicide. It has always felt like fear-mongering to me. Control. "instead of showing you genuine love that elaborates God's love, let me tell you about how horrible hell is so you're pressured into joining the faith"... The faith can be beautiful but people have turned it into something else. Thanks for elaborating the way you did. And what you brought up about how a deity could see the amount of suffering someone like Annie went through and want to punish her even more. That's my whole thing with supporters of that same way of thinking. What did your God do when this person was going through the most traumatic s*** ever. When my mom told me my dad had died, I looked at this picture we had on the wall that had scriptures written. And all I could ask myself was "God why would you allow this to happen" I enjoy your view on Annie's situation being a metaphor and how you think about reincarnation in terms of energy. That gives me peace.  Not Dumbledore, gotcha haha

Please never apologize for your ramblings and sharing. Absolutely loved, agreed, and enjoyed reading this comment. The idea of the movie being a challenge to various religions' doctrines and the needy gives you for introspection and asking some bigger questions. Thanks for sharing your experience with dying Stars and the thoughts that came to you. Oh the mind of a child. Why do we ever grow up and lose that beautiful childlike mind and creativity? You are a spiritual being having a human experience. Yes yes. I love it!

Oh absolutely love to hear your thoughts. Most people who click on the movie and then go on to read the comments are probably aware of all the spoilers and have seen the movie

Franklin

I like that a lot. Especially helping people finish their Journeys that they didn't finish while on Earth. Reminds me a lot of The Sixth Sense. You're very welcome. I'm happy I watched this

Hey Frank, I appreciate you reacting to this movie, even moreso since some parts weren’t really to your taste. Apologies in advance for the long ass comment 😅 I grew up Catholic. I’m not really practicing any more, but even knowing how guilt-driven the religion is, I still forget how strictly punitive the religion appears from the outside. And this movie definitely takes heavy influence from Catholicism, especially with the idea of purgatory/levels of hell, its treatment of suicide, and we clearly see their wedding & funerals took place in a large Catholic cathedral. Suicide used to be considered a mortal sin in Catholicism (the highest level of sin) to the point that the church would not allow funerals or even burial of those who died by suicide within Catholic cemeteries. They believe that life is a gift from God & thus belongs to God. So in dying by suicide we take away something that is not ours to “dispose of.” There’s not a lot of autonomy in the church; everything is done in service to God or belongs to God. The way the church teaches, it’s a wonder anyone reaches heaven at all. Ironic given the history of the Catholic church. Your feelings on the topic are 100% valid. Like you said, it’s a horrific concept for those who have suffered so much in life & died by suicide to also suffer in death. Especially Annie’s character - for any deity to look upon this person whom has endured the deaths of her young children & life partner within 5 years, and not to treat her heartbroken soul with the most tender compassion is…unfathomable. Since this movie is somewhere between religion & spirituality, I take Annie’s fate as her grief & guilt unfortunately continuing to weigh on her soul past death - a possibility since none of us know what comes after. We just hope for better. She is fortunate to have a soul mate & loved ones in the afterlife to help heal & unburden her, which I find hopeful in a way. Idk what that says about those who unfortunately lived & die alone, but I don’t personally believe this type of Paradise/Hell afterlife anyway. But the added thought of Robin Williams’ death years after he made this movie & knowing he endured years of depression beforehand is definitely chilling. Another way we could look at Annie’s hell is some kind of metaphor, even if it’s literal in the movie. How many times have we or others we know chosen to stay & sit in our pain because it’s familiar & the “ghosts” of our lost loved ones are still there? Healing and moving on means leaving them behind in a way. It means finding a way to live without them, which most of us dread. Like the movie, those that love us & are still with us help in the decision to pull ourselves out of the pain. It’s a heavy movie for sure. It was one of my mom’s favorite movies when I was growing up, so I have some sentimental attachment to it. She was very Catholic, & she adored how beautiful heaven is in this movie. As younger kid I loved the visuals and the idea of loves that endure in and beyond death. Lastly, I’ll say that I do believe in reincarnation in the way that I know energy cannot be created nor destroyed, and I think souls are a type of energy. PS: Cuba Gooding Jr. (Albert) is another outstanding actor. I don’t think he’s had as many amazing movies, but he’s great nonetheless, & I just felt the need to give him his flowers. “Men of Honor” might be his most stand out role. (Don’t watch “Radio;” it would not be made today.) PPS: That’s not Dumbledore 😆

I loved this movie because it came to me as a challenge to religious dogma of all types of cultures. It challenged the viewer to question there views on a very taboo subject matter suicide. Many religions believe that it is a sin to commit suicide because you were given a gift of life and that gift wasn’t yours to just end so they created in religious dogmas, places like hell, Purgatory because they believe that no matter what your soul has been inflicted with that life must end in its path and it’s natural timing in order for your Gyor in life to be complete. The subject matter of reincarnation that many religions believe in, the strict belief system of Christianity of all types, they are made up of individual human beings and their own personal journeys throughout this life. I love this movie because it challenges us to confront our systems. It allows us to safely without dogma to personally look inward to find our own relationship with our higher power or in an atheistic view, allow us to challenge us to look further into possibilities of where the spirit resides within the scheme beyond flesh and bone. I’m not articulating myself very well. I love the movie because of the use of art, painting, and the understanding that what we perceive in this life Holtz mini different keys to a shift in our own reality. It allows us to safely explore emotions and damage that only we know within ourselves and touches us in ways that are healing. It allows the viewer to not be preached at and that nothing is written in stone because we don’t know in our mind where the spirit transforms past the living embodiment of our bodies. Energy never dies. It just takes a different form and whatever that form is would be considered eternal. When I was a little girl looking up at the stars after reading that stars light that we see with our eyes is the light from a dead sun, and as I was looking at the light from these dead suns I thought crossed my mind that made me giggle, that I was looking at a universal fossil in the sense that the sun is dead yet the light it had emitted millions millions of years old in order to reach my eyes that if the star was dead at the beginning point to where it slight reached my eyes, it would make it a fossil of energy, and then I realized the light was still there even though it’s starting point is dead. The light still existed so therefore eternity must be possible. I’m sorry I’m rambling. I just love the movie because it was thought-provoking, and the visceral reactions each person had was very personal. Your visceral reaction to suicide was visceral for its own reasons that we may never know, but you will explore that because something I perceive you doing not just as an artist but as a spirit that thirst for understanding yourself. The greatest gift we can ever give ourselves is to be fearless when looking in word and honestly assessing and challenging ourselves to grow past the things that make us place barriers, we create in order to spare our mental and spiritual blockages into knowing ourselves better and accepting ourselves as we are so that we can continue moving forward we must have challenges. I have a saying that I live by. “I am not a human being, having a spiritual experience, rather, I am a spiritual being having a human experience.” Please forgive the run-on sentences, punctuation or spelling errors. I am severely disabled elderly, and I use voice activated typing that I cannot correct for. I don’t have the use of my body or hands anymore. I wanna thank you so very much for taking this journey and allowing the rest who have not seen this movie to experience it in the way they will receive it. Many blessings to you your family those who you love and love you in return.

Thank you, thank you thank you thank you.

I loved the movie for all the beauty and the dreams - and disliked it for all the reasons you did too. I won't write them out here in case it's a spoiler for someone who hasn't seen the movie - but I 100% agree with your sentiments on that.

Elizabeth

The actresses name was Annabella, so, I always wondered if they'd imagined that to be Annie's full name, too? *shrug*

Jessi

I love how the movie tackled something so abhorrent (that some people go to hell when they don't deserve it) and turn it into something that isn't impossible...it's just something that hadn't been seen before. It gives me a lot of hope that the movie only removed the idea that death is the end...we could still have things we need help with and need to work through. They also imply still more mystery...why would this heaven be the end to...what dreams may come. 😉 lol. Sorry. Thank you so much for reacting, was lovely!

Jessi

I think Bella is like a pet name (term of endearment) in French? Im pretty sure it means “beautiful”.

Carol Rocha

you're in the right place for that. thank youuu

Franklin

I need something beautiful and tragic this July 4th. Thank you!!

Jessi
