Truly a fantastic movie eh? IF you want more of Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, you should check out "Gangs of New York" - arguably his other best performance of all time.

2024-07-01 17:06:39 +0000 UTCright??!! That's probably what he said. Is just too perfect. And Eli's reaction almost proves Daniel said some shit like that. And as we see at the end of the movie he wasn't freaking joking. I'm glad you could check it out Jessie. Thanks for watching.

2024-07-01 16:59:43 +0000 UTCI agree with you. I didn't see it initially because I assumed he was greedy but somewhat a good man. But eventually we saw his true colors. The scene of him telling off his son was so heartbreaking

2024-07-01 16:56:26 +0000 UTCWhat you spoke about when trying to break down the core themes of the movie - "family vs goals" - is very near the bull's eye. This movie is about the rise of modern American capitalism in the early 20th century coming into contact with traditionalism. You see it in how he transforms rural settings into industrial ones. You see it in how he utilizes the concept of "family" as a sale's tactic by bringing his adopted son around. You see it in his very real conflict between himself and the local church. At the same time, the movie tries to show how the pursuit of greed will inevitably leave you bereft of emotion. This is why the soundtrack gets all crazy and erratic at times - it represents the destruction of Daniel Planview's soul.

2024-06-30 00:18:11 +0000 UTCI'm only just realizing as I'm rewatching this along with you what Daniel must have said to Eli in the church after he was "bathed in blood". I think he must have said "There will be blood." Wow. Gosh, it's been so long since I've watched this and watching your reaction was a great excuse to rewatch it! Thanks for the content!

2024-06-29 08:35:37 +0000 UTCThe main character was always a very damaged man, he didn’t lie when he told his son that he used him all his life in order to fulfill his need to succeed in the oil business. I believe his deep emptiness could never be filled, and as he grew in his own self loathing, his ability to be cruel became more refined. The more he succeeded the deeper the darkness of the pit of his soul became. His ultimate demise came long before he murdered Eli. Eli‘s murder only solidified to the audience the depths of the darkness, which had always resided and festered within the main character.
