Oh my goodness that sounds awful. Sorry about that. Glad you're feeling strong🧡 he really is. I love that man and his creativity. I love that you mentioned arrival. Anytime I think of that movie I get chills. And what you said about the movie/adaptation is so real. It takes a genius to condense all that material, and then find a way to pass some of those messages just through visuals and sound. Part 2 was a trip, I had to drop everything else and watch it ASAP. It's currently on patreon. I hope you enjoy

I'm honored that you chose to watch it here. I just posted doing part two here in patreon. Top tier indeed. The whole thing gives me chills. And part two is even better. Thanks for watching

Franklin

I feel you on that. Waiting on an honest adaptation of something you really love can be very disappointing or all you ever dreamed of. I'm glad this was the latter. Sometimes I wish Denis made it a 10-episode TV show/miniseries to really flesh out everything. But I think what we got was amazing. He went the route of making a movie trilogy (I hope) For real you don't like the soundtrack? 😭 you know what, I guess when you already have a vision of how stuff should sound and look in your head from the books, and then the movie doesn't live up to expectation, it feels off. So I totally understand that And I've already watched the part 2. It's here on patreon

I remember reading the books when I was younger and wishing that there was a worthy movie adaptation. I loved the mini series from the early 2000s and this movie is graphically definitely what I imagined. It took me a couple times watching this movie to really appreciate it though. I feel a lot of information got left out that would have been important to mention but then the movie would be 5 hours long. And even though I really like the movie now, I was not impressed the first time around 😅 and I REALLY hated the soundtrack hahaha. I'm still not convinced of the soundtrack to be honest. I liked your reaction and can't wait to see you react to part two!

Omg so excited to see Dune 2!! I think I'll wait until I can watch here. I was going to watch it with friends but missed out. I got so much out of this viewing of Dune thank you! The acting and cinematography was TOP TIER. I'm still a bit sad about the teacher being killed at the end. He was so smart and interesting but I guess he played his part. So excited to see the next one!

Franklin! I got so sick while I was watching this, I was laid out with stomach flu all weekend, then I had to be out of town. Anyway, I'm healthy and back watching my fave reactors 😊 Isn't Villeneuve wonderful?! Remember how amazing he dealt with time in Arrival, he does such a great job of it with the visions in this movie. A cool juxtaposition between this film and the book... that book is dense af! So wordy and descriptive of the world, it took me a while to get thru it. But this film is so much about the visual and auditory senses. You can follow along the story with little dialog, just amazing. Part 2 is even better, more characters and intrigue!

Fascinating World indeed. Just reading your comment a thought just went through my mind "This lore is fucking amazing and so compelling" It is good to know where the author got some direct inspiration. Makes so much sense. Your comment really helped shine some light on some confusing parts. Thank you

Franklin

I hope you enjoyed your day off and the video😁🫡

At first I was worried about reading this comment because of maybe part two spoilers, or just waiting to learn those things in part 2. But reading it was extremely helpful so thank you

Though there was little doubt, I’m glad you loved the movie. I’m even more excited for you to watch Dune 2, which is an absolute masterpiece. And anyone that tries to argue with you about the political influence in the movie has no legs to stand on. The history of imperialism, colonialism, and the search for oil in the Middle East were direct inspirations for Frank Herbert, the author of the book. I haven’t read the books, but I’ve been able to learn some lore since the movies came out. This is set thousands & thousands of years in the future after a war on Earth between humans & AI. Because of that, present technology is relatively simple, not relying on AI or programs. Instead, humans have learned to develop super-human skills, and enhanced by Spice. For example, the Bene Gesserit (the group including Jessica & the Reverend Mother) have extreme control over their own bodies & mind such that they can choose the sex of their children, and use The Voice to manipulate others. The man that in charge of security (he had the little umbrella) is basically a human calculator, able do complex computations mentally. Dr. Yueh was part of a specialized branch of physicians, Suk Doctors. They are supposedly mentally trained to make it impossible to not betray their employer & to not kill their patients, which makes Dr. Yueh’s betrayal even more shocking. It’s a fascinating world!

Yay! I'm hyped because I have the day off and this is such a treat! I'll comment when I'm finished 🧡

LORE DUMP: So Paul's mom Jessica is part of an ultra-secretive order of what are essentially "Space Witches" called the Bene Gesserit. They control the political movements of the empire from the shadows. They also manipulate bloodlines by arranging relationships with particular noble houses. The purpose of this is to eventually create what is called the Kwisatz Haderach, a man who has a bloodline rich in noble genetics, while also being infused with the powers of the Bene Gesserit. Such a person (the Kwisatz Haderach) would be able to essentially fold "space and time" in their own minds in order to have a view of all possible "eventualities". In other words; to see the future. The reason for this is because, although Humanity has advanced a lot, the Bene Gesserit know that humanity is always on a precipice, and that it only takes a small amount of external pressure to cause us to go extinct or to have our society collapse in on itself. (Fun side note: when it says the year 10,000 at the beginning, it isn't 8,000 years in the future. It is 10,000 years after an event called the "Butlerian Jihad" - in reality this is closer to 20,000 years in the future). Who better then to lead our race as the true Emperor than someone who can see the future? Someone to find the narrow way through the tangled webs of destiny for us? Paul's dreams are these "eventualities" playing through his mind. Possible future situations that may or may not come to pass. One of the reason they fill Paul with fear and uncertainty is because he has not fully harnessed his power/destiny yet. Another reason is that, once a man gains that level of power, no matter how pure their intentions or values are, a different, colder calculation takes over their mind and spirit. They must make decisions that, although could be for the greater good, can also easily lead to the death of millions. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. In his dreams, Paul gets a glimpse of that future self with that sort of power, and it scares him. As the visions tell him: "You must face your fears" / "Climb up" / "Rise". At the end of the movie, Paul says "my road leads me into the desert. I can SEE it". This is him slowly starting to grow into who he is. The Kwisatz Haderach, the product of 10,000 years of genetic manipulation. The God Emperor of Mankind. This aspect is fully explored and elaborated upon in Part 2, and the underlying themes of power and politics, governance and control are central pillars to the book the movie is based upon. The issue with Paul is that his mom was ordered by the Bene Gesserit to have a daughter, not a son (yes, they can manipulate their bodies to guarantee a son or daughter). However, Jessica knew that her son, with the noble house Atreidies, had the potential to become the Kwisatz Haderach, and so broke with the Bene Gesserit order and chose to have a son anyways. This makes Paul the unwanted "Chosen One", because the Bene Gesserit order likely wanted to wait another generation or two before birthing the Kwisatz Haderach into the universe. In regards to the weapons the Harkonnens used to destroy the Atreides' ships during the invasion, the reason they are like that is because those weapons are designed to pierce the shielding around the ships without causing a "catastrophic explosion". Remember at the beginning of the movie when Josh Brolin's character mentioned that "the slow blade breaks the shield"? The same principle applies here. They are slower moving kinetic projectiles meant to break through the shield. The reason the ship implodes is because the shield is still operational, even if its been pierced by a single projectile, so when the ship underneath the shielding explodes, the explosive energy can't break through the shield wrapped around the explosion, and so the energy reverses direction; thus imploding. The reason they are kinetic (physical) projectiles is because if a laser weapon makes contact with a shield in the Dune universe, it creates a chemical reaction that essentially causes a mini-Nuke ("Catastrophic explosion"). This is also why soldiers mainly use swords. Its because every soldier will likely have a personal shield on, and if they are fired upon by a modern laser weapon, the reaction it will have with their shield will annihilate all the soldiers around them, including your own guys. This is why the rules of war in the Dune universe dictate that swords are the primary weapon of combat, with atomic weapons and some laser-based weapons being straight up outlawed and banned. Of course, they are still used from time to time, but those actions are, technically speaking, "war crimes".

YES! This will be my 6th time watching this movie. Can't wait to dig into it with you and to inevitably add some of my own comments.
