Thanks for being here for it. It was such a good movie. I could watch it over and over again

Franklin

Excellent reaction, thank you!

Jordan Long

Thank you so much for bringing this up. I don't think you misunderstood it at all. I agree with you 100%. I believe in his wonderful attempt to break Will down, he made a mistake including Will's lack of knowledge about loss. He was spot on on everything else, about Will talking so much about many things but never fully understanding them, because of his lack of personal experience. Like you said loss, on the other hand, will know way too much about that. I absolutely agree with you.  Or maybe it was just that type of loss he was talking about. Because he explained being on the battlefield and watching his friend looking at him for help while dying. But that would imply that some losses a greater than others which I feel is not that important.  big or small, we have all experienced loss and we know what that feels like. Thanks for watching and thanks for bringing this up. I'm happy you're doing better

Franklin

I am finally getting myself together again. I didn’t expect to be that affected emotionally especially since I have seen it before. Thank you for your willingness to listen. I know most people really love Robin Williams monologue when he meets with Will the second time. I think it’s really good but for me there is a major flaw that almost ruins it. The part where he says that Will doesn’t know about loss. Will is an orphan. That’s an incredibly traumatic loss. One that’s difficult to recover from especially if the loss happens before you are able to speak. Working through trauma that is preverbal is nearly impossible. Maybe I am misunderstanding what is being said here because I am too close to the subject matter. I would appreciate any thoughts you have regarding this. I haven’t ever had the courage to discuss my thoughts on this film with anyone.

ZoeLo

I'm happy you mentioned that. It's so heartbreaking and beautiful. I could tell after she questioned him and asked him to mention their names again, he mentioned them without skipping a beat. You could tell they were his brothers and they meant so much to him, he definitely wasn't making it up.

Franklin

Oh my goodness I fucking love that. What a genius Robin Williams was. Now I have to go watch that scene again😂 it was so beautiful the way he tied it into what he was trying to tell Will. Both in real life and in the script

Franklin

Oh, no problem at all. I can share some that come to mind real quick. The British colonized Nigeria, so we speak British English without the accent. So instead of "pants" we say "trousers'', instead of ''trunk'' we say ''boot'', instead of ''period'', we say ''full stop'' Another one that comes to mind. I never faced direct or indirect racism in Nigeria because we are all mostly black\ African. That changed when I came to the US where racism is obviously ingrained into its history and still affects minorities and people of color to this day. So that's not fun and was a big cultural difference for me. Those are just the two that come to mind right now. I'm always open to talking about some of these topics if they arise in my reactions or other conversations when it's relevant.  Appreciate your caution to not be culturally insensitive or say something of bad taste to other people of different cultures. But to be honest it's inevitable. But I think what matters is your intention and how you come off. Not speaking for all of us, but in my experience, people of color, minorities, and people from different parts of the world can tell real quick if you're being a bigot or if you're just unaware. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. But I applaud you for wanting to know and prevent such situations💜

Franklin

Gotcha. I'll look that up. Thanks again

Franklin

It's all good. Sounds like a good movie. Hopefully I'll check it out soon.

Franklin

You're the first reactor that thought the exact same way I did when he said he had 12 older brothers. Most people think he's lying (and he did about them living together) but I think he's talking about his foster siblings.

JennaB

Would you, if you haven't already, and if you feel comfortable with sharing these kinds of things with us... would you ever consider discussing some of the cultural differences from Nigeria to how different things may (or might not be!) compared to American culture? Again! Only if you feel up to it or if you feel it might be relevant to your channel in anyway. I've traveled overseas to Trier, Germany and got to see a lot of people from different countries altogether in the same place and it was always interesting to see how behaviors varied from group to group. And I swear it isn't like I want to treat anyone like a science project, I just wonder if I've ever said or done anything unconsciously in bad taste, you know? I'd hate not knowing I offended someone just because of social and cultural differences. But only if you ever want to or if you feel like it. No pressure, no obligation, no disappointment if you don't want to, of course!

Trash Boat

I also hope you don't mind my sharing that the whole scene where Robin Williams mentioning his wife's farting adventures? That was entirely ad-libbed, so it was unexpected by everyone filming, so the laughter in that scene was genuine. If you look closely, you can also see the camera wiggle the tiniest amount, suggesting even the film crew got a chuckle out of the whole thing, haha! :)

Trash Boat

Sorry! Another good one of his is Patch Adams. More humor and slightly less drama :)

Elaina

Nice! I'm new and didn't know you were. His wife in the movie is an artist, and it explores their bond through her artwork. Definitely think you would enjoy this one.

Elaina

Oh my goodness I love that you mentioned that. And please don't apologize for being vocal. That's the whole point of this lol. The reactions shouldn't be one-sided. I also really want to hear you guys' thoughts on the movie. It's a win-win. I love this and I had no idea it was a therapy technique itself. Freaking brilliant. And I love how you explained it. This might be a cultural thing, I'm from Nigeria and I guess you can say a big part of our culture is respect. Just overall respect for our elders. To the point where when I was being scolded by my parents I didn't look at them back in the eyes. Because something about that seems like you're challenging them. And I think as I grew up it just manifested into if I'm arguing with someone, especially if it's a productive civil argument. I tend not to look them in the eyes, so as not to seem aggressive. That makes me appear more non-hostile. So I totally understand what you mean by being analyzed or being judged or put on trial.

Franklin

I'm glad that some progress has been made. It's so sad because the way therapy and people who needed it were viewed was almost like a matter of fact. all the misinformation that became common knowledge.

Franklin

Also also also! I'm sorry I'm so vocal but I wanted to mention!!: That scene on the bench? Where Robin Williams' character is roasting Will about assumptions and what he thinks he knows about people and such... that's a good therapy technique in itself! By not facing Will head on the discussion is less aggressive and more comfortable to have despite the subject matter because they're not squarely facing one another. It makes my little heart so happy to see it in practice, since I'm a kind of person who is constantly on guard and feels as if everyone is set up to attack me. When someone sits next to me it makes me more relaxed and more prone to talking honestly because I don't feel like I'm being analyzed or being judged or put on trial. It's a small thing, but it's important, you know?

Trash Boat

Honestly, I should look into Ben Affleck. I think the only movies of his I've seen are Gone Girl and the Batman movies. I should look up his brother too.

Franklin

Thanks for watching with me. I hope it was as good as you remember. You too. Stay smooth🙌🏾

Franklin

Someone recommended this movie to me. They said I would really enjoy it because I'm an artist. And honestly after this movie. I could definitely use some more Robin Williams films :) thanks for recommending it

Franklin

Damn. I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes these movies and the characters hits too close to home. But I think that's a beautiful thing because we can also see ourselves in them and see how they handled it. Thanks for asking. I'm willing to listen to as much as you're willing to share. You're very welcome. I enjoyed every second of it

Franklin

You are absolutely right in your assessment of therapy and how it was viewed in the 90s. We can see some of that in the problematic language that's dropped and how comfortable people are saying the "r-word." Therapy was gaining traction, but usually it was viewed negatively because of "the kinds of people who are in therapy." It was usually seen as something that only the "craziest" people needed, and our past history as a country and how we handled these vulnerable people doesn't help. We housed these people in asylums where they were left in deplorable conditions up until as recently as the 20th century. And while improvements have been made and we're getting better, I would argue that even though we dismantled those old buildings and the horrors they represented, it's almost like we moved our mentally/emotionally/spiritually vulnerable population from one prison to another, since a lot of these people don't get the help they need and are continually written off as dangerous and they end up in actual correctional institutions where no one is equipped to help them and they become institutionalized. It's so sad... But I'm glad we get to see things like this, where there were practitioners who actually give a damn and want to help. 💜

Trash Boat

Yup Ben Affleck is one of the biggest movie stars in the world, and his brother Casey is an even better actor in my opinion (got an Oscar for Manchester by the Sea) . Family talented as hell

BrennenPS

Another great reaction my guy!!!! Haven't seen this film for a while and it was great watching it back with you. Take care of yourself and looking forward to the next one.

P Bb

You should check out Robin Williams' movie What Dreams May Come. It's absolutely beautiful and a bit heavy, but one of my favorites. Really shows how much of an amazing actor he was even outside of a comedic role

Elaina

I’m so glad that you chose this film. I actually have a really difficult time with it. I connect too deeply with Will. I can’t even catch my breath. I wanted to share some thoughts with you but because of what it brings up for me it might be many small comments instead of just one long one. If this is okay with you please let me know. Either way I appreciate your reaction to this film.

ZoeLo

Thanks Matthew. I hear that. It’s so special. Quite shorts too. When the movie was done, I was wanting more. I wish the movie was longer because it was just good. Watching them keep having these conversations.

Franklin

Great reaction. Easily one of my top 5 movies of all time.
