BtS: Bigger, Beefier... And Faster
Added 2022-12-07 01:38:15 +0000 UTCI've said before (many times) how much your support means to me. The encouragement and enthusiasm means more than anything, but the financial support really does matter. Thanks to you, today I was able to upgrade to a 3090 card.
From a technical perspective, when running these renders, the number of characters and assets I can load into a scene is entirely dependent on the GPU's available VRAM. My old 3080 was great for a lot of things, but was limited to 10 GB. More than three characters in a scene, and I had to start juggling a lot and working with different angles to make things work. (The scene in Alex's apartment with Nick, Seth, Connor and Ronan - the latter two sometimes as werewolves with a lot of fur - was particularly difficult.)
The new 3090 has 24 GB - - more than twice as much. So, it's not only faster, it can just handle so much more in the scene. More characters, more light, more "eggplants."

2022-12-14 00:01:48 +0000 UTCI'll add, if folks want to try this, you don't need a mega powerful gpu to start. The older gpus just need more time to crank out the same quality image, as long as they have enough vram for the assets you're putting in the scene. I'm also told I force my renders to run much longer than a lot of other devs, so some are turning out 4k images in about the same amount of time. But, since I run them while I'm asleep, the extra time doesn't bother me.

2022-12-13 23:56:47 +0000 UTCSure! For rendering, it really comes down to the GPU. Previously, it was an EGA 3080. Now it's an EGA 3090 FTW3. Rendering time is a bit improved. I render at 1920x1080 and a typical scene took about 15 minutes on the 3080, now it's around 9 minutes with the 3090. But the big improvement is the increase in VRAM, from 10GB to 24Gb, which let's me add a lot more to a scene. Other system specs are: i7-12700K ASRock Z690 PG Riptide mobo 32 GB RAM (DDR4 3600) A couple M.2 SSDs, a 2 TB HD, and a 1tb external drive for backups.
