Natalie had come to make sure it was true.
She stood over the open casket and looked down on old Mrs. Kell’s lifeless form.
A part of Natalie felt vengeful satisfaction that her tormentor had perished, but, mostly, Natalie felt fear. With Mrs. Kell dead, there was no way to break the spell, no way to be Nathan again.
A year ago, Nathan had knocked up Mrs Kell’s granddaughter. It wasn’t malicious, they just got caught up in their passions and things happened.
When Alice ended the pregnancy, Nathan had reported her to the police who charged her with murder.
Mrs. Kell, a talented witch, swept into action. Pulling from elemental powers of the universe, she changed the entire world.
All record or memory of Alice’s charge was erased.
And Nathan was transformed into Natalie so that she could learn what it was to be a woman in a world that didn’t respect her choices.
For a year, Natalie had worked to placate Mrs. Kell’s anger. For a year Natalie had campaigned for choice, had fought for women’s rights and begged to be turned back into a man.
For a year Mrs. Kell told her, “We will see, once you learn your lesson”
Now Mrs. Kell was dead, Natalie was still a woman, and worst of all, she was two weeks late for her period.
