His initial experiment was brief, a single day 20 years in the future. He projected into his son. While in the future, Ian learned to his dismay that he had died 19 years earlier of cancer. In his own time, Ian confirmed that he did have cancer, and it was too late for an effective treatment.
He returned to his lab terrified of his own mortality. He would use the device to escape into the future! Not wanting to supplant a child or grandchild, he set the machine to project his consciousness into a descendant 250 years in the future!
