The Assignment

That schedule meant that he had to finish his classes this year and the only way to get the credits he needed was to take Professor Lexia’s full immersion history course. Two semesters with his consciousness projected into the body of a resident of the target time period, graded on how well he fit into the cultural norms of the time.
The Professor warned Kyle that there were a very limited number of hosts available. It was very difficult to find someone who would not have a significant impact on history. They would be projected in 9 ½ months before the target’s historic death to reduce contamination.
Kyle insisted that he would take any target host that remained. When the Professor told him who he would be, he almost dropped out but he was determined to meet his schedule, He spent the summer studying the period and the customs.
Now, for the next 9 ½ months, Kyle was lady Jane Ernwright, the youngest daughter of a minor English nobleman. Her meek position, subservient to her older sisters and all men had greatly limited any impact she had on history. He wished he had studied female biology a bit more because, the fact that in 9 ½ months she died unwed in childbirth was the most notable fact about her
