Ever wanted to QUIT? Why I stopped taking lessons

I need to come clean with you guys. When I first started playing guitar, I resisted learning theory because I didn't think it applied to METAL. At my first guitar lesson, my teacher handed me the 7 modes of the major scale. "Learn these by next week", he said. I threw it away and quit instead!

Years later at music school, I realized that was a huge mistake! After attending a few semesters of ear training class, I started to hear modes in all my favorite songs. The majesty of Lydian, the demonic gloom of Locrian and even the uplifting cheerfulness of Ionian. In this video I'll show you a rock or metal song for every mode of the major scale! (full tabs below)

IONIAN | NUMBER OF THE BEAST

You wouldn't think a song called Number of the Beast would be in a major key but here we are. Iron Maiden's classic track uses the D Ionian scale to tell the biblical story of the number of the beast...which is of course 420....I mean 666 muhahaha

DORIAN | SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND

Dorian is one of my favorite modes. It's like being stuck in between heaven and hell. Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a perfect example, targeting the flat 3rd and raised 6th scale degrees

PHRYGIAN | SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTION

The 3rd mode of the major scale has a dark, brooding quality. Dave Mustaine wrote a song in  Phrygian called Symphony Of CONSTRUCTION....I mean Destruction

LYDIAN | COUNT OF TUSCANY

The bright, nostalgic character of Lydian can be quite addicting. It's a major mode defined by the devil's interval, or raised 4th degree. Dream Theater's Count Of Tuscany is the perfect example

MIXOLYDIAN | THUNDERSTRUCK

Listen to ACDC's Thunderstruck to hear the Mixolydian mode in action. It's close to Ionian, however, there's one key difference...the flat 7th degree. This turns the party from a suit and tie event, to a ruckus rager!

AEOLIAN | FEAR OF THE DARK

Aeolian is a sad, sad sound. The b3rd and b6th often make people weep. Iron Maiden's Fear Of The Dark has a touching melody using this mode in the key of D Aeolian

LOCRIAN | PAINKILLER

The last mode of the major scale is by far the most evil. It took me years to learn how to harness the raging darkness of LOCRIAN. Everytime I play it, the b2 and b5 open a portal to hell muhahaha. Judas Priest's Painkiller is the best way to get acquainted with this Satanic sound!

⭐️Which mode was your favorite? The cool thing about modes is they each have a unique personality. Use these sounds to channel your emotions and articulate what you can't put into words. If you're interested in the topic of modes, you gotta check out the video below. This is a special video that specifically targets how to write music with modes using scales, chords and counterpoint!
