Chapter 247 – Day 532 (Part 2) – The Army Of The Ritualist
Added 2022-12-14 00:01:01 +0000 UTC“I got point, watch above and my back,” I said to Naran.
“Might be better if I engage, since I am faster,” Naran said.
“No, we don’t want to get caught up. Once we reach the stonelands, it will be too difficult for the Ritualist to chase us. Also I want to use up my energy and regenerate it,” I replied.
“Ah, and I would get tired,” Naran added as we raced through the East Bastion towards the West gate.
“Yes. I have no doubt he will try to slow us down and swarm us. We go around and keep running. If he used consumption, which appears to be the case, he can outlast us,” I bitterly said. I had been hoping the Ritualist had not discovered consumption, but I was wrong.
Now, only Naran exceeded his possible stats, but only in Body. I could probably kill twenty level 3 hybrids and Naran could do half of that, even with the Ritualist’s control. But I was worried about the hundred more he had behind those. With the assembly line of consumption, I had seen and dealt with, I had no doubt he would have a prodigious army, since he wouldn’t have any upkeep costs.
We kept racing through the city, since I didn’t want to be stuck at the gate. “Up and over, or through the gate?” Naran asked.
“Right through. Hopefully he didn’t put something big to block the exit,” I replied.
“That would be annoying, almost there,” Naran said. I nodded at that, not saying anything in reply. It was time to focus all my attention on the battle to come.
The wall was just ahead and there was the tunnel through it. I took the lead and there were no monsters. Nothing registering to my danger sense. We exited into the grasslands West of the East Bastion. To the Northwest I saw several massive pulsing red worms plowing across the ground and monsters on top of them.
Apparently, the Ritualist was a fan of the classics. I angled slightly to the South as the horde moved to intercept us and it truly was a horde. I counted at least 2,000 monsters, probably 3,000, if any were hanging in the back. I was kicking off low to the ground, with little time to count them all up.
I needed to move as fast as possible, which meant no midair spins like I had done against the golems. I had to constantly kick my legs and feet down to propel me forward with minimal loss in speed. It was going to be close.
“Above us. Clear hawks, blend in with the sky,” Naran replied. He had it easier with his much higher Body stat. Dammit, I should have invested into it more. But I had never through 500 in Body would not be enough with the rest of my stats and skills.
I spared a quick glance upwards for a brief moment. There were at least five of the clear hawks, almost translucent in appearance. What was the type? The type dammit? Naran wouldn’t know the answer. I didn’t have my notebook with me to look through, since it was back in the cart with Fethee and Heba.
The monsters were less than a mile, about a kilometer away. We had a couple of minutes left before we reached the interception point. I altered my trajectory to turn more South, but kept the main direction to the West. If we didn’t escape, the Ritualist would be able to hound us to death and we would die of exhaustion.
To get through the level 3 zones, we need all our strength. “Want me to delay them?” Naran asked.
“No,” I quickly said. “Watch. Above. Intercept,” I replied with one word answers between each breath.
“Got it,” Naran replied.
“Air Burst.” I prepared the skill for the critical interception point. The mental attacks were easy to ignore, but could I escape? It was all so pointless? I clenched my jaw as the thoughts tried to worm their way into my head.
“Whirlwind!” Naran yelled out as he leapt into the air, making sure to keep his forward momentum. His massive buster stick swinging around. Four of the clear hawks that had been swooping down were smashed and turned into dust. Metal men leapt off the nearest worm and raced across the ground towards me in a sprint.
Acid Shot x5. Air Burst. I sailed past them as my acid attack struck them. It did little damage, but they stumbled and slowed down. Several hybrids with massive purple eyes instead of heads began to glow and I felt a vibration. Beams of fire lanced out from red crystal hybrids.
“Air Burst. Air Burst.” I used the skill two times in a row to propel myself forward and out of their range. Naran landed next to me as we escaped the interception. That had been a bit too close for comfort. “Air Burst. Air Burst.” I used the skill two more times to put more distance between me and the horde, Naran easily keeping up. We entered the level 2 zone, and the army of the Ritualist was still right on our tails.
“Still have those clear hawks above us, but they are keeping their distance for now. Our speed is about even without using your skill,” Naran told me. “You think he will keep chasing us?”
Naran, my friend. That was a very dumb question. But I could understand why he asked it. Still, it was super dumb. Clearly the mind stat was not imbuing people with intelligence. “Yes,” I replied. The Ritualist and I had a bond. A bond of death. He had me in a tight spot and I had no doubt he would leverage this for everything he could.
To think that he would just change his mind and go back to his city was a fairy tale. The man would pursue us, me more than Naran, relentlessly to the ends of the Systemic Lands. I knew this since I had done exactly the same thing tracking him all the way out here. I didn’t regret it, at least I knew the threat he posed now.
Purgatory would have to marshal everything it had to face this threat. Even with a barrage of Radiant Beamsthat would not be enough. The City Shield, which would have been a great equalizer, was something the Ritualist already knew about. It would be stupid to think he didn’t know after taking over a city that had one.
How could we even begin to fight such a ridiculously sized army? It would come down to a battle of attrition. Bunkering down would be a losing strategy long term. We would have to maximize the number of shots each skill user of Radiant Beam could get off. That meant the first battle would have to occur outside Purgatory.
Say ten beams hit, that would be ten monsters down. The worms should be the target. But the Ritualist had to know that since they were big and I didn’t know what pulsing red meant in terms of type. They also weren’t hybrids, since they had no human features. They were clearly meant as mobile transports and siege weapons.
The best target would be the mental attack type monsters. Level 3 hybrids with mental attacks could easily sweep the walls clean. There would be very few people with the Mind stat needed to resist such attacks. The big hope would be on Clarissa’s secret death squad she was forming up.
I hadn’t seen them in Heaven and they clearly kept their heads down, but I had no doubt they were out there doing things. Also, mental attacks should work as well. That was a critical weakness of summoners. I didn’t think it would do that much against the Ritualist, but every bit was needed.
“They are matching our pace,” Naran said.
“Makes sense. They aren’t faster than us. But they are close enough in speed they can keep up. The real issue will be those metal floating spheres in the stonelands we have to get by. We can’t afford to take it slow, but we have no idea what attack they will use,” I replied.
“We might be able to run by them. They don’t float that fast and their type seems to negate skills. We run by them and let the Ritualist deal with the mess if he keeps chasing us,” Naran said.
“It is our only option unfortunately,” I replied, hating being backed into a corner. But we had no choice. The Ritualist had grown insanely powerful, too powerful for me to confront his horde of hybrids and summons alone.
It wasn’t any one monster, or even a group. It was the entire horde all at once. The mental attacks. The vibrational attacks. The beams of fire. The skill resistant hybrids. The flying monsters. Well that was what bombs were for.
I noted that several of his hybrids were carrying spears and shields. If I had to guess he had dabbled in enchanting but hadn’t plumed its depth like Purgatory had and learned to weaponize crafting crystals. Anything that couldn’t be solved with an explosion, just required a bigger explosion.
I would need to get a large bomb, prime it, then activate it. A large force bomb would be perfect. I could kill a bunch of monsters and then create distance to escape. Large attacks, impacting multiple monsters should strain the Ritualist’s concentration. That was why he to be carrying most of his army on his worms.
If he had to manually control each and every monster, not even a god gamer could have that kind of actions per minute, or APM. I knew what it was like to control a summon and hybrids were similar enough to have the same issue. It used up a lot of focus and that was another weakness the Ritualist had that hopefully we could exploit.
“How many did you count?” I asked Naran.
“With eight great worms, carrying around hybrids in rows of six by forty on their back, I would say around 2,000. But I noticed a reserve force as well. Probably the Ritualist’s physical body,” Naran answered.
“Ah, you saw that. There was a super worm of some kind, twice as big as the others, and lots of other combination hybrids on it. One off experiments most likely,” I said heavily.
“Call it 2,500 easy. All level 3 monsters. You take half, I got the other,” Naran said and I cracked a smile at that.
“Half, you want half. Pfft, I can take two thirds of that, you can take the other third from the kindness of my heart,” I replied.
“Got a plan?” Naran asked seriously.
“Yeah. First, we need to get back to Purgatory. Then launch raid attacks with Radiant Beam and massive force bombs to create distance and confusion. More bombs the better. Also using a mass charge of summons to cover our retreat and wound his monsters. He can’t heal them, so attrition is key,” I replied.
“But he will reach Purgatory,” Naran said.
“No doubt. We give up on the wall and force him to commit to the city while we launch counter attacks to draw him in. Once inside or a good chunk of his forces, we activate the City Shield and wipe out a large portion of his army. I doubt we can catch him like that,” I explained.
“A good plan. But I doubt he will play by our rules and pull something out of his ass like always,” Naran replied.
“He pulled an army out of his ass. Quantity has a quality all on its own. We are definitely going to have to earn our paychecks this time,” I said.
“We have paychecks?” Naran asked me.
“Clarissa is going to paying out to us, for her food ventures. Well if they survive this upcoming war.”

I think I'm going to let the chapters build up for now and consume it in one go. I'll be back next month otherwise it would feel slow.

2022-12-15 02:30:14 +0000 UTCMmm i see his points and understand him on it but for me its the contrary, i love exactly how it is about these aspect for now and the passing of the story, the grinding, the horror situation out of it and the mind problem of the MC on it and on a lot of other things, and off course every little detail discovered and need pondering of it and reevaluate their action/attitude and learn of it each and everytime, a lot of them change thing and make tension about the what if, what next, what to look about in all these still mystery in this first layered world building, and it make MC live in the now and i like read this type of progression I find you have a good balance in "filler" and progression and these type of thing (+ its fast update so even if like him possibly in some aspect i can bruh and vent for 5-10 chapter, i find it very acceptable in the end :) Well if you bring 40 chapter of only that its no, but they are little progression in my view in a lot of multi aspect in these chapter, it build thing up solid for what come next and i enjoy the passing of how its done, also yeah we feel its gonna explode and the world will open fast and big soon with how they progress, exponentiel with thing going everywhere at the same time and so many of them (like you said its maybe a little too fast as of now with the progression with the thing needing to be done and make solid before it explode and go everywhere and with this possibly miss thing, as of now it build solid fundation and put every element and aspect of the world building and what happen solid), so yeah, its a bit like a bottleneck thing that they are for now and with their situation, but when it pass that it will explode and open soon and go everywhere and very fast with tons of new element (basic layer of worldbuilding will be more or less totally discovered and the new thing will add tons of implication and thing to show/writte (ex: inter city shit and faction relationship is off course a logical step up and a thing i would love to see) Man i talked too much, its a bit giberish and not clear...beter going to sleep :P

2022-12-14 22:36:40 +0000 UTCHmmm, these are valid criticisms. Thank you for sharing. Patrons deserve full replies. The simplest way to put it, is that this is a webnovel that has a high release rate of 2 chapters/day or 14/chapters/week currently. While I won't writer filler, there will be setbacks. I get complaints about different types of story arcs. People hated the Ritualist. They hate the city building. They hate the exploration. The flip side is that different people like the different volumes. If I just focused on a single theme, it would get boring very quickly. Why do you think exploration only lasted one volume? Imagine 3 volumes in a row like that. Same with any other story type. I mix things around with the focus of each volume to keep the story engaging over the longer term. I understand some things appeal to different people, which is why I understand the need to vent a bit. A lot of future exploration is going to be glossed over, or done outside of Michael's perspective, which is why I am releasing portions of the map he has only tangentially been to going forward. The story will be picking up speed into inter-city conflicts after the Ritualist and more high end level fights. I could write a story around the Ritualist, each and every step he takes. But a lot of it would be very boring. So while he gets some chapters to highlight what he is up to, they aren't something that could stand on their own. Things happen at the same time without regards to other events. Clarissa forced the upgrade to happen when it did. Michael wanted to find and kill the Ritualist. These things are independent of each other, but the timeframes overlap. Like Michael using up his points to heal from his arm getting dusted and then the Ritualist acting. Things aren't going to occur one at a time in a nice orderly fashion. I am going to say brace yourself in this regard. Since this is going to happen with all antagonists to fill in their backstory. While the Ritualist came from Michael's actions, many of the future ones will be external and need that backstory to understand their mindset and motivations. I got the same complaints about the thefts from the city. Now the security is top notch and it isn't happening again. Characters aren't idiots in the story and prepare things and learn from what happens. I would say that Clarissa and General Smith really pull Michael's feet out of the fire in the next volume. In addition, I would almost say the progression is too fast for what I want. But I refuse to write filler volumes. TLDR: So, yes, I agree with you some events are delayed and there are setbacks. It is frustrating and some volume arcs don't appeal to everyone. However, you get 2 chapters/day, which compared to other people only posting 5/week and inconsistently with breaks is a huge difference in posting speed and leeway should be allowed for setbacks.

2022-12-14 18:35:35 +0000 UTCIt kind of feels like the story is going nowhere lately, or more specifically Michael's story. With the constant setbacks and no gratification; like the broken shop, especially after the shop upgrade was hyped for so long, and then we see the ritualist. I feel like I wasted time reading about Michael. What's the point when the enemy gets so strong while we read about Michael doing the same thing over and over like a repetition. It's been half a month since the shop failed upgrade and we never recovered from that set back; at this point, I would prefer for Michael to die and the ritualist to become the MC, his story and progress seems much more interesting. I know that there are two chapters a day but half of them feel bloated with text. The outings have lost interest since they are basically always the same; half of those chapters are only conversations between Nathan and Michael, and those can even be completely skipped since they contain nothing apart from small talks, even if they talk about something new it will be shown later when they act on it, so there is no need to do 'tell', just doing 'show' is enough, don't do 'tell' too. A lot of chapters have been about new informations that isn't really that important or that could have easily been skipped and then summarized; for example, you could tell us those details or info when Michael needs to recount the events to Clarissa. Too much is being shown and told with no real progress. I feel like a time skip from the destruction of the shop pillar to now would have made the story much better, nothing said in between was so essential that it couldn't have been summarized. Then comes the ritualist, and it feels like he has made more progress in 30 chapters time than Michael ever did the entire novel. It's just depressing at this point. Was there new information we got to know this volume? Yes. Could the info have been summarized to take less time? Also yes. Did Micheal make any progress? Doesn't feel like he did. The main problem for all of this is that there is no pay off for the setbacks; for the entire volume there has been zero gratification for the readers or Michael. The thing I was looking forward the most was the shop upgrade, but even that was taken away; I was still hopeful that it would be fixed fast with a time skip.. Now, too much time has passed and any excitement I had is gone, I just want it to be over. The story is still great, but this last volume just felt like a chore. Also, this is just me ranting, I needed to get it out; feel free to ignore it.

2022-12-14 18:29:32 +0000 UTCMichael killed anyone that talked about him to others, Ruth was talking behind his back, etc. His reasoning to her was because she sided with him in his battle against the Guild, but she clearly did that because she wanted his knowledge about grinding, etc. I think she will be much worse than the Ritualist, because she get to know him, at least for a while.

2022-12-14 18:29:06 +0000 UTCMmm i agree this little point/part can gain to be reworked a bit or more accentued in detail to support the scene going like that and be more accepted by more reader (with the Ritualist and strangle scene) If how its written can be possible to happen like that and it's more or less with believable implied reason? yes but its a bit over the top in the reasonning and multiple circumstance chaining together like that, a bit of a strech :P gain to be reworked a bit (not is best chapter) and i think he lost some reader about this point here :P For Ruth i don't agree with you here in my view, seem totally "good" how it goes and his character (its a new situation that MC live and feel with her action and the thing with her)

2022-12-14 15:23:18 +0000 UTCI will just add that the Ritualist is the first Antagonist for a reason. Level 4 is not just a number one higher than 3. Also there needs to be a counter to Michael. Otherwise exploring and just upgrading skills/city drama gets repetitive. As for his army, well we are going to get flashbacks on how he learned about consumption. The Systemic Lands is about to explode onto the wider area, with the other major players stepping up. It is part of the suspense build up, and a pusedo cliff hanger, on how he recovered so fast. But, I won't drag out the mysteries out, once we are in Volume 6. Most of the answers come in the first 5-10 chapters from Michael and the Ritualist. As for ass pulls. The Ritualist has one last one that is the biggest of them all. Small traps, and minor tricks will no longer work. Only unrelenting power. And yes, this has all been planned since the first chapter. There is even proof of this which will be pointed out soon. But I won't drag out a mystery just to drag it out, so one full layer is being peeled back. There will be more questions of course, but they are new questions. So buckle up, this is where things start to get crazy and will make you want to reread all the previous chapters, just to double check.

2022-12-14 13:58:15 +0000 UTCWell, I am not going to spoil anything. But all his progress wasn't ass pulls this time around.

2022-12-14 13:44:37 +0000 UTCGreat suggestions! 1. It is discussed a bit more later, but the end of Purgatory, is the end of Michael's power base. If he can't defeat the Ritualist on the field of battle and Purgatory is lost, then he will not easily be able to challenge the Ritualist again. 2. Don't underestimate the Ritualist. Also there are cracks, and Michael could end being pinned with his back to the void. Something he wants to avoid. 3. Back to issue number 1. Purgatory falling, would be a disaster. If the Ritualist ignores Michael and goes straight for Purgatory? Also the Ritualist can travel much longer, since he isn't physically moving, he just needs to stay awake. With consumption his stats would be higher, so his Endurance is greater than Michael's.
Mister Vii
2022-12-14 13:43:37 +0000 UTCThe problem is not the Ritualist itself, its the way he and Michael meet and how until then Michael always killed everyone with acid or a sword but he was only suffocated? Lets not even talk about how he left Ruth alive? I know that he is only human and etc, but the author clearly made him someone who thinks about the consequences or implications of his actions, which makes it hard to write when he makes a mistake that feels believable.

2022-12-14 06:05:37 +0000 UTCSince it looks like the Ritualist is going to be in another volume, here are some thing only he (him only) could pull off since he is such a Genius (1 in a thousand million year kind): - Direct Energy Manipulation (already hinted at) will be used to avoid the magical cancer from over consuming hybrids. He will have such great control that he can purge these impurities from his body ;) He will also observe his own body with his ultra superior energy sense during hybrid consumption, so he will be (have been?) drawing in the ambient Energy into his own body to augment it without the need for level 4 hybrids ;) - Direct Energy Manipulation will be used to mimic skills and the store's ability to create objects (is the store creating objects or teleporting them to the pillars from some stockpile? Maybe learn teleporting as well because he is a Genius) - Energy Transformation: likely would be needed to mimic the skills anyways. With this ability combined with Direct Energy Manipulation, he will also be able to enchant stuff without the use of the enchanting hall. I am sure I am missing many things since the Ritualist is have you heard, a Genius, and I can not possibly describe all his abilities. Please feel free to add to the list.

2022-12-14 05:46:51 +0000 UTCHere we go again, another massive hand job for the Ritualist. I was never a fan of the decision to have him escalate in power way too easily. It feels way too forced and un-organic. I hope we get a satisfying closure on him because he feels like an ass-pull.

2022-12-14 03:16:58 +0000 UTCMichael should consider a few things: 1. Maybe it would be smart to just run around a lot and waste the ritualist time. Hybrids need to eat, Controlling all those units must be exhausting. 2. Consider going near void zones, since being near void zones affects the mind, all the summons should be affected. Even if it's a tiny bit, all the affected summons should transmit their pain to the ritualist which would be a lot. 3. Consider splitting up. The horde can only follow 1 person. Narun could go warn purgatory, michael can do some distractions.

2022-12-14 02:20:14 +0000 UTCThat's fantastic. I was already thinking about potential scenarios on how he accelerated in power so fast, good to know that part of the story is already incoming. I'm also looking forward to seeing if he has tier 4 and just hiding them for now or if they gave problems like Michael guesses. Thanks for the chapters as always

2022-12-14 00:37:27 +0000 UTCOh buckle up. Volume 6 an Illuminated Mind will have Ritualist chapters, which will shed a lot of light on what he has been up to, before Michael showed up and how he recovered to his current strength.
