Chapter 219 – Day 506 – Leaving Once More
Added 2022-11-30 00:01:01 +0000 UTCI got up and showered. I stretched as I let the water run over me. There would only be more fights in the future. Another battle I managed to pull through somehow. My old armor was trashed. I put on my new armor. Same as the old. Elise did good work on her designs.
I looked at the chest that I had requested to be put in my room. I left all ten of the flying worm crystals inside of the chest along with the golem crystals I had managed to keep. I was not ready to summon a level 4 monster. The risk was too high in my mind. I would not be the first person to test that. But I also wasn’t going to let those crystals go.
Opening the door to leave my room, there were two guards outside who quickly saluted me. “Glad you are doing alright Champion Michael,” one of them said. While it would be nice to try and learn people’s names, I didn’t have the energy or motivation to do that for people I rarely saw. Better to just be polite to the staff and not worry about remembering everyone’s’ names.
“Thanks,” I replied with a nod and set off to get some breakfast. I was glad my room hadn’t been destroyed. Clarissa had been smart to put it in the center of the building on the third floor, with no windows. That was just asking someone to sneak in and kill me.
I arrived at the mess hall’s second floor overlooking the main area. This was the reserved table for semi-private conversations that Clarissa and I had eaten at before. I sat down, it was quite early still. I was a bit surprised when an older woman came into the dining area and smiled when she saw me. “Champion Michael, what do you want for breakfast?” she asked.
“Whatever is prepared. Don’t go out of your way,” I answered. No need to make a fuss or ask for impossible things. I could do that with Clarissa when she annoyed me or had a minor screwup, but I wouldn't torture the staff of my home like that. I needed to come up with something after the latest debacle.
“I will prepare a full spread, don’t worry. The bread will finish baking in about ten minutes. Some orange juice or apple juice?”
“Orange juice,” I said.
“Pulp or no pulp?”
“Pulp is fine,” I replied. The woman curtsied and quickly left. At least Clarissa hired efficient people. I rubbed my right arm. The level 4 monsters weren’t going to get any more of my limbs. My arms and feet had all been replaced.
It made me wonder if my head was cut off and landed on a store pillar, could I buy a new body? There would be the issue with having two contact points, but it was an interesting and grim hypothetical. At least the core of my body or my head hadn’t suffered serious damage yet.
Naran came out a few minutes later and sat down.
“How’s the arm?” Naran asked.
“Weird like the last time. Just feels different, or it could be my mind playing tricks on me,” I said.
“Maybe. You mentioned that in all test cases people felt weird,” Naran said.
“Yes. Too bad, I wasn’t able to save my old arm. We are going to need to work out our aerial combat tactics as well,” I said and forced myself to put both hands on the table. I clenched my fingers on my right hand. There was just something off about getting a new limb, but I couldn’t say what it was. Probably my brain and nerves being silly, but there could be other system related reasons. Regardless, it was annoying and a bit stressful.
“That is going to be hard. We did the best we could, I think. If it wasn’t for the Airship Port, we would have been screwed,” Naran said. That was the truth unfortunately. No monster had hit an energy limit, since they all seemed able to spam attacks.
“And the city shield, you feel that?” I asked. I still didn’t know what to make of the city shield and how that tied into energy and everything else. Why did everything lose color except parts of the level 4 monster? Why the pressure at the start?
“Yes, like being squeezed. I noticed the energy doing it as well,” Naran said. I considered doing negative energy training, but I had come this far without it. I was not about to take drugs of any kind. My resolve was being eroded but was still unbroken in this regard. “The energy was twist up. It is hard to explain.”
The server lady came out with my drink and Naran asked for apple juice. He was a traitor to the glorious pulp orange juice. The thick sweet taste, instead of the weak watery apple juice. He lost Michael points for his choice, the most important points of all. Why were we even friends again? Besides him saving my life multiple times and having my back? I grinned a bit as I sipped my wonderful pulp filled orange juice before speaking up.
“Well, it was a general suppression. Also, the outer edge of the shield aligned just at the outer edge of the wall. Attacks could go through, but there was a barrier in place preventing a person from going back in. Once they started to exit, they were forced to exit all the way. Six people were trapped sticking an arm or foot off the top of the wall,” I said. Complete idiots, but it was good we had learned about that issue now.
The city shield was a one way barrier and everything not a person was suppressed in some way or dusted as was the case for the low level summons.
“Ah, Clarissa update you last night?” Naran asked.
“She did. A lot of new things to think about. What about you, melee combat work out okay?” I asked. I hadn’t been able to focus too heavily on Naran during the fight.
“Need better weapons. I was breaking swords left and right. Also, that landing was bad,” Naran said. I nodded at that. It was a bad fall.
“Surprised your leg broke like that, with your Body stat,” I replied. I wanted to get his opinion on why his leg didn’t hold up.
“It was a really bad angle, and I was moving at a high speed. I did feel my Body stat try to resist the impact for a second, but it wasn’t enough,” Naran said, and I nodded at that.
“Good to know. Jumping off a ten-story tower, dangerous,” I replied a bit sarcastically.
“Yes, who would have thought that?” Naran asked while rolling his eyes. That was when food was brought out. I enjoyed the fluffiness of warm bread and butter. It was delicious. Fruit platters were brought out as well. I really enjoyed the strawberries. They were nice and juicy and in slightly different shapes. I guess there was some variation allowed even with food.
“You really want a round two of that disaster?” Naran asked me. That was a loaded question. I let out a sigh and looked up at the gray ceiling.
“No. I am half tempted to say we need to grind more,” I replied. Grinding up stats was the safe answer.
“No world tour then?” Naran asked.
“I said temped, but I am not changing my mind. We won in the end. I could probably win one on one against those monsters without the city shield,” I said. It would be a hard fight, but I could win. I felt I had a good understanding of my combat ability compared to level 4 monsters. Especially after losing an arm.
“But the worms came in a swarm, pack, whatever. The point is level 4 monsters form teams,” Naran countered. That was where the real problem was. Level 4 fights, could easily be a team battle. Still, that wasn’t the biggest problem at the moment.
“Well, I don’t see people stepping up, unfortunately,” I replied and shook my head. “There are a lot of implications that are more concerning. A city can be wiped for million points. Just get someone with a lot saved up to sneak in buy the upgrade. Then it gets worse,” I explained.
“There is the issue of one of the pillars being destroyed. If all eight are destroyed, something bad will probably happen and the repair cost is astronomical, but it might scale on city level,” I finished explaining. The words ‘critical damage’ were bouncing around in my head.
“Not much we can do. Anyways they are getting more Radiant Beam skill users. Get a 100 people, you could blanket the entire sky. Even a level 5,” Naran said.
“Maybe. The skill is powerful, but it didn’t kill the level 4 monsters it did hit. It is flashy, but it is only a level 3 skill,” I replied, basing the skill level off the dungeon boss, not the zone. “If there was a level 5 monster, it might just be a tickle.” The level of a skill mattered, since skills were clearly less effective as one went up in levels.
All the level 4 monsters had taken time to die after being hit with Acid Shot. Even level 3 monsters took a second or two. A level 5 monster would just get some irritated skin. That meant I couldn’t count on Radiant Beam being super powerful despite how flashy it looked.
“That is true. Also, level 4 monsters have more variation, you notice that?” Naran asked me.
“No, what do you mean by variation?” I was curious what he had spotted.
“That their stats are probably not almost all the same like level 1 through 3. There is no way I would have been able to cut through the golems with how they were throwing themselves around without a scratch. But when the worms hit the ground, they took some minor damage, especially if they landed on one of their wings,” Naran explained.
“That means different Body stats since the golems were leaping everywhere, which probably means they all have different stats. Still a lot of them, but combined with skills, that is just more variance,” I worked through the issue out loud and then frowned. It was good to know that monsters could specialize.
“So, we are going to do this again?” Naran asked.
“Yes. Getting the store upgrade is important. If we want level 5 equipment, then we need a higher level Processing Rod and higher level enchanting tables. It will be a hassle and a half, but worth it in the end. Also, if I wasn’t an idiot jumping into the sky to fight aerial monsters, things would have gone better,” I answered.
“I never thought I would be the one saying this, but perhaps more grinding?” Naran asked.
“Well, we are planning this 100 days from now. The world tour will take 30 days at most I would guess. To find all the level 3 boundaries and level 2 monster types,” I replied.
“Dungeons?” Naran asked.
“Maybe. Depends on how much risk there is. I could use 8 level 3 skill upgrades. You could use some as well,” I suggested.
“Not really. I am going to focus more on the physical route, Body and Mind. Just need a good weapon that can handle a high Body stat,” Naran said.
“Sounds like you should be the one trying to upgrade the store then,” I said.

Yeah don't tire you with updating the map all time, it's too much (guess when they finish the entire loop or a good half? (so we have agood view of the border of the beginner area, or see some of the other things you still placed here ;P some other city i guess? but maybe other twist of you placed here hehe :)

2022-12-02 22:06:09 +0000 UTCGreat comment and guesses! There will be a new map when the exploration is done, updating the boundaries for sure. Probably come in with Volume 6. Doing one each chapter as they explore is too much. There will be improvements over time. Like the grid layout of the inner city. I do keep an eye on all the amazing suggestions people make.

2022-12-02 21:33:32 +0000 UTC"It made me wonder if my head was cut off and landed on a store pillar, could I buy a new body? There would be the issue with having two contact points, but it was an interesting and grim hypothetical. At least the core of my body or my head hadn’t suffered serious damage yet." Maybe if you stick your tongue and touch with your face or forehead (tongue is identified as a "limb"?) :PPPP This is something really needed to know, if foot or tongue can be used like that or if it's really only hand and body who work (so if 2 hand cut you fuked?) plenty of situation when its really useful and can be vital when using head + tongue or head + foot (and using your one hand/arm to pick your cut arm and stick to the cut part) can be possible So the just 1 millions and go into a city and upgrade the store and so city get 10 level 4 monster is just so bs, it's just indefendable, there are just no way now, city is a lost cause because of that (what about next upgrade? same problem will alway be here, city mean nothing now with how easy its possible to destroy them in a war between group) no point to have city or just be ready to get it destroyed all time There a need to have a function vs that who appear (mayber after the first hurdle for this first 1 million?) (like needing the Rode of Control in hand and touch pillar with to have acces to Upgrade store option Hmm vs aerial they are badly defended (and pillar area is critical) They need to rework their building, and put some little building around the plaza (or beside/sticked to the building of the pillar or both if possible (also into the inner city too) where they pay floor upgrade on them and so build some type of Tower for range and saturation and control of aerial space with them The room with bed into the middle of his building with no window and closed when he sleep is nice, but to be better he really need to create minimum three same identical room with his bed (can even have them sticked to each other in the middle of the floor but better separated if possible) and he choose one to sleep on it randomly each day, that complicate the work of assasination a lot and can save his life if people manage to enter and break into his home when he sleep and they need to destroy and break into his sleeping room, they can choose badly :) its mind game play but its important now that he know that assasination is possible and will happen at some point anyway (that cost nothing to do that and its another layer of defense :P paranoid as a dictator is the Best :)))) I have pointed little things too in the post of the map of the city and how she is for little idea and things that as a group they for sure will implement in the city at some point with what is needed to work and how and when they see problem and have some feedback (if you don't have see it look about it) 30 days of travel and a lot of new area and things to see (important one too) like if you do a update of the map soon (i love it so much :P) Ahh for finish i have a little theory, with first time seeing a pillar destroyed and Critical Damage mention and etc and this monster attack The Void Area, what if it was old city who get fucked like that and so turned into this Void place? (they are distant to 5 block to each other, awfully like a possible old cluster/area of city (medium level one? like city in this beginning area are around 2 block distant so with 5?) They are in a beginner area who get reshuffled and restarted by the system, this world is vast maybe and old :P (maybe other race alien too in the past and they failed :)

2022-12-02 20:44:21 +0000 UTCIt would have been very dangerous for him as well without his very high stats, if the level 4 monsters kept targeting him.

2022-12-01 18:14:42 +0000 UTCgreat reply, I am mirroring the story to wuxia where its fast paced and new power levels and mechanics are introduced at lightspeed. Anyways, Im still salty about the title not being Purgatory because of some existing book title conflict! It would be so much better fit to describe the story in general. Nothing we can do bout that.

2022-11-30 15:53:01 +0000 UTCDamn Michael actually got uber lucky the treasury got stolen so often, it would have just been a wipe if they had gone ahead with a city upgrade a couple hundred days ago 😂

2022-11-30 09:27:33 +0000 UTCEarlier setbacks were a blessing in disguise. If the city had had more points and tried to upgrade earlier (before Michaels latest grind) everyone would have been wiped.

2022-11-30 05:47:59 +0000 UTCIts a story with two chapter a day release, which is pretty awesome, if faster progression is needed, just wait one to two weeks tor 14 or 28 chapters to build up, then a better sense of the progression speed will be felt.
HenryMorgan
2022-11-30 04:45:40 +0000 UTCI'm happy with the release schedule, also, thanks for the chapter. Any situation where they come out mostly alive with more knowledge and a forward plan is a win.
HenryMorgan
2022-11-30 04:41:09 +0000 UTCThanks for the comment! There are setbacks, but I don't feel they are that excessive considering the overall release rate of this story at 14 chapters per week. If this was like other stories with 3-5 chapters per week, then I would agree with you. But the high release rate means that situations get to a resolution much more quickly than they would otherwise. I would also argue, they gained information and knowledge. They also set a date for the next attempt with plans to succeed.

2022-11-30 04:29:33 +0000 UTCEnchanted sword?
Simyian
2022-11-30 04:28:57 +0000 UTCThanks for the comment! If he is stolen from, then there are serious concerns about Clarissa's management and hiring practices. Clarissa knows this and isn't going to let people enter his room, since that is the kind of assassination that he won't blow off. His home is her fortress. If the crystals are gone, then he isn't safe sleeping there. I will say read the following chapters, before wishing for city upgrades as a weapon. He didn't use any enchanted weapon. And a Force enchantment does not enhance durability, only the force the weapon applies or receives. So while reducing the incoming force, can reduce the total impact, Naran also has over 1,000 Body. He needs a weapon/enchantment to match that. Also a level 4 monster just looks at a level 1 enchantment and lols for the most part. The force bomb arrows were an annoyance, not a winning strategy.
Mister Vii
2022-11-30 04:24:02 +0000 UTCThanks for the comments! Pacing is a big deal. I refuse to right excessive filler, but I also refuse to 'speed things up'. At my release rate, it isn't like you have to wait that long to get a resolution. That is why I put the days on my chapters to pay close attention to how long things are taking and a reminder for people as well. Also at 14 chapters per week, compared to other authors 3-5 chapters per week. You aren't going to get cliffed that long, when a setback does happen. So, I don't feel as bad as an author for including them.
Mister Vii
2022-11-30 04:18:46 +0000 UTCGreat comment and questions! Setbacks are part of life. In a chaotic situation like the Systemic Lands with unknown things, these setbacks happen more often than not. Breaking the store pillars has been speculated on for a long time, but no one wanted to take that risk. So there was a lot of knowledge gained, and they are going to try again as soon as possible. Michael has a better idea of what will happen/aerial combat. The RMPF is getting more skill users with Radiant Beam. More gear will be prepared. People got a true understanding of the BS of level 4 monsters, since only Naran and Michael had survived an encounter so far. Oh, also Fethee. As for the drag to the story itself....this story is released at 14 chapters per week. If I was doing 3-5 chapters per week, then yes it would be dragging. But at the pace I write at, it is more acceptable to have setbacks. I try to keep the pacing overall consistent as well. So, while there are setbacks, the characters work to address them, just like they would in real life. Level 4 monsters attack a city when it is upgraded? We need more Radiant Beams, this can be used as a weapon, and so on. Ruth is smart. If you knew there was a man who can and would kill you, and he controls the government, you aren't going to make yourself easy to find. If Ruth shows up in front of Michael again, she is confident she will survive 110%. It is annoying, but that is her personality.
Mister Vii
2022-11-30 04:13:57 +0000 UTCThanks for the catch. Fixed. Missing shots is a risk at longer range. At it was blanket fire, to make sure they hit. They also trained to line up their shots like that, so in the even the Ritualist attacked, they didn't focus on a singular summon. No one but Michael and Naran have seen a level 4 monster and survived. So while some people take it seriously, it isn't a priority mentally compared to threats they think are more immediate.
Mister Vii
2022-11-30 04:05:20 +0000 UTCI agree, I like the current speed and as the city upgrade proves progression is not too slow, its the opposite. Michael is going too FAST because aside from him and naran, pretty much no one was ready and prepared for lv4 enemies.
Grey Kylia
2022-11-30 03:30:19 +0000 UTCStory is feeling like no progression is happening. Getting tired of all the setbacks.
2022-11-30 03:06:11 +0000 UTCI'm shocked Michael is leaving those crystals inside a chest. It can't be that expensive to put a hidden compartment directly under his bed and also under a rug or something. It's just asking for them to be stolen and literally everyone knows he has them. That means this could be Ruth's moment. She implied that she knew how the ritualist did his tricks so if she gets wind of those crystals it would be big trouble. I really hope Michael pulls through on that threat and 'upgrades' esperanza to reset that city and expand his glorious empire. He finally pulled through on skinning and salting someone, could be a good sign. As for Naran, I thought enchanting a weapon with a passive force would make it more durable due to resisting the incoming forces or whatever. I could be wrong but that's what I thought they inferred from it before. It could be easy enough to enchant that onto the monster processing rod that was already stated to be quite durable for emergencies. It's not a blade, but still.
Grey Kylia
2022-11-30 01:25:28 +0000 UTC1111000 point and you can basicly kill a city... Noice also I'm a bit confused as to why people hate on you taking it "slow" which I can 't really understand because it seems like we are getting that world tour hopefully no void island sennanigans 😜

2022-11-30 01:13:30 +0000 UTCI am disappointed in not getting the next level store upgrade. It feels like this plot device of getting delays is tired, first it was the Ken and Tyrese battle, next Ben stealing crystals, next Ruth and Ritualist stealing crystals(again!) and now broken pillars. How small is this world that you need to setback the progress of protag to keep them at a state of constant drag. Isn't there more to explore? Also, the rise of the Ritualist is forced (an opinion others also share) and just happened when all right conditions are met. I knew the Ritualist would be in the story for long when you decided to distinguish the chapter titles with roman numerals etc. XVII. And also Ruth, goddamn when are we gonna have a closure on her?

2022-11-30 01:04:16 +0000 UTCGreat little arc there and battle scene writing Michael doing all the movement training was so good. And his logic on what skill roles to fill turned out to be so smart. The air step movements been invaluable. And the water shield to block the assassination explosions was so clutch and cool to see since he doesn’t use that one much. Dodging > blocking it seems like anyway. Don’t know how it would work with his stat spread, but seems like Naran would probably get a lot of use out of air step Damn, such a shame that the upgrade got cancelled. Painful not to at least get the reward of new store stuff. What an insane amount of points to repair it. Almighty System got no chill lol The other commenters were spot on about the weakness of radiant beam and the missed shots hitting the house. Guess that was the warmth that the baby mother felt? Think it’ll be pretty cool when they’ve got themselves the radiant beam squadron. Wonder if they will try to get radiant beam upgrades Kind of interesting to imagine Michael blitzing into Ruth’s (or whatever enemy’s) city at some point with a million points and calling down the heat Hope nobody steals those crystals Looking forward to the world tour “I would(n’t?) torture the staff of my home like that.”
