Good call Shan.

I don't think this was the best episode. I think it had some interesting ideas and discussions but it just didn't come together perfectly and wasn't as interesting as it could have been and the bad CGI didn't help.

When the Doctor says in this episode, "Really shouldn't take that long just to reverse the polarity. I must be a bit out of practice." this is a nod to Classic Who. The Third Doctor was known for 'reversing the polarity of the neutron flow". It was his sort of catchphrase/catch-all solution for saving the day. When in doubt, reverse the polarity.

Kinda ehh season so far IMO. What do you think about it so far? And you called that so fast lol

Agreed πŸ’― same story told in a slightly different way- maybe the writers knew something we don’t or maybe Hollywood has run out of original stories

I have a soft spot for this episode as it involves a mad scientist trying defy nature but his attempt backfires, that is my favourite sci-fi cliche and that is how sci-fi started with Frankenstein. Although I will admit that the CGI for the monster is really bad and I'm not the only one who says this. That creature has appeared in a lot "Top 10 worst CGI effects in tv" lists and its not hard to see why. It reminds me of Dwayne Johnson when he was the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns. With that said there are still some positives like when the Doctor and Lazarus talk about living longer, because you do get some interesting debate from them. Lazarus is someone who wants to live forever, while the Doctor is someone who is 900 years old says that living longer is a bad thing as you lose everyone and its more of a curse then a gift. Also Harold Saxon is a name that has been a recurring thing this season. Saxon was first mentioned in The Runaway Bride when the tanks shot down the Racnoss ( "Orders from Mr Saxon"), heard the name again in Smith & Jones on the radio and when Martha enters the TARDIS a poster is seen in the alley called "Vote Saxon". The man Martha's mum speaks isn't Harold Saxon but one his employees. This Saxon person is basically the new mystery for this season, like Bad Wolf and Torchwood was.

I say Professor Lazarus reminds me more of Curt Connors/The Lizard from Spider-Man, cause they both want to create something that will improve human lives. Goes well at first but then they end up turning into monsters. While Connors was sympathetic as he wanted his arm back and help others who lost limbs, Professor Lazarus was just a creepy old guy who wanted disgusting old men like him to live longer.

Not my favorite ep, that's for sure, but I do LOVE that Martha stood up for herself and said what she wanted.

Hi Shan. Just James Patreon member. In creating a 'mad scientist' story, Stephen Greenhorn was inspired by The Fly (1986) and The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde. He also sought inspiration from Spider-Man villains Doctor Octopus and The Green Goblin. The working title for this episode was The Madness of Professor Lazarus. And original script ideas included Professor Lazarus working on developing invulnerable synthetic skin. This was dropped because RTD feared that this might be part of the plot of Spider-Man 3, which was due for release around the same time the episode would air. Mark Gatiss' appearance in this story makes him one of five people to have both written for and acted in Doctor Who, and he was the first to do it in modern Who the others being Victor Pemberton, Derrick Sherwin, Glyn Jones and Toby Whithouse. As the rejuvenated Lazarus, Mark Gatiss wears a wig he previously wore in an episode of The League of Gentlemen, (a dark comedy TV series on the BBC) he played a veterinary surgeon. There was no "NEXT TIME..." trailer at the end of this episode, instead there was a "COMING UP..." trailer to show what was still to come in the series after the 2 week break due to the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, as stated in the end credits, "Dr Who will return in two weeks". The DVD release changes this trailer for an actual NEXT TIME trailer instead. A fine episode, I like Mark Gatiss he has this wicked acting ability of being able to be deeply emotional and scarily calm - rose and half because the Doc gets slapped by an angry mom, again!
