Torchwood S01E03 - Ghost Machine FULL REACTION

I don't think they felt bad for the rapist. They were sympathetic for Eve. She killed a person. Not everyone can handle that. Even when they kill an evil person, even in self defense, defense of others, even to save another's life. It can torment them knowing that forevermore, they are a killer.

English slang is interesting, but so weird. I remember one from the movie Chaplin, where a character says something like, "you like my new whistle?" And he's talking about his suite, and explains, "Whistle and flute. Suit." There's a video from about a year ago, where Tony Head did a video with James Marsters and Juliet Landau; asking them rapid fire questions about what they thought other English slang was. They got some right. I was happy I knew most of them. Like Apples are "Apples and Pairs. Stairs." The one I think is most fascinating though, mostly because so many people seem to use it benignly, has to be "burke". I know Giles uses it referring to Wesley in at least one episode of Buffy. I'm fairly certain Ron calls someone that in the Harry Potter books; and I think Hagrid does too. People seem to assume it means "jerk," but that doesn't fit the rhyming slang, since the rhyming word usually gets dropped; and from what I can find, it's supposedly short for "Burkley Hunt"... 👀

I knew that but only because of a scene in Ocean's 11

I don't think the team was mourning the guy, more so how things played out. Death is easy, especially depending on one's view of the afterlife. Unless you're someone who truly believes there's punishment for sins or bad behavior after death or whatever, death is arguably not punishment; particularly if by chance there is simply nothing. Not regret, no karmic retribution. I tend to lean towards letting them rot, for those who deserve it. I get the sentiment though. Why should they enjoy breathing privileges if they've denied others theirs? Especially if you know unequivocally, like we do here, but too often we can't have that degree of certainty; and there are examples where the judicial systems get it wrong. If there is no guarantee of greater punishment after death, and especially where someone like this guy wants to die to relieve his burden; it's arguably better to have them live and experience the pain. Compounding that is Gwen being used as the implement of his death; whether he deserved to die or not, Gwen didn't deserve to be dragged into it and be used as the means of his death. He wins again, attacking and traumatizing one more person on his way out. She wasn't prepared yet to be responsible for anyone's death, much less having their blood on her hands; even with (or especially because of) the vision she saw of it happening. I feel like that's why Tosh tried to make the case that the guy wanted to die anyway, to make try it make it more acceptable for Gwen's part in this. That, I think, is what the team are rallying around, sympathy for Gwen and not the creep. That's arguably the thing Owen is remorseful for, saying he screwed up. He might not have necessarily cared otherwise, but if he hadn't taken the knife and wanted to get his satisfaction, Gwen wouldn't have ended up with the knife and helped with the guy's suicide.

'Barney" is English rhyming slang; in this case the Flintstones character Barney Rubble, rhymes with trouble. The couple Rhys refers to were having trouble/having a fight.

I was in a gaming guild with a woman from London about 15 years ago. She told me (at the time) that your normal street police don't carry guns. They have special units, equivalent to US SWAT teams that use fire arms for when a situtation requires it

Retro Tom

Yep. Most police here have never touched a gun and never will.

In the UK, most police don't carry guns. Mind you, this is anecdotal for me, as American, but I did look it up to double check that I was recalling correctly; and the info I found supported my recollection of it. To my knowledge, the UK has some pretty hard restrictions on firearms; which even extends to law enforcement.

First, I owe you a thank you. I hadn't re-watched Torchwood or Doctor who in years (other than new episodes) but you doing reactions made me figure out where to watch in Australia so i could re-watch without bringing out my old DVD's, and i am very much enjoying my re-watch, so thanks. Second, i think this episode shows a lot more of the dark places Torchwood can go to and i think that is a good contrast to the last episode. Like you, i was confused about why Gwen couldn't use guns when she was a cop, so I researched it, and apparently in the UK only certain "armed" police officers know how to use guns (that's what research told me, so please British person point it out if am wrong). I don't think they were mourning him, but in a sense the loss of Gwen's innocence, or at least that is how I see it.

Just James. Patreon member. Russell T Davies picked Helen Raynor to write a two part story in Who season three based on the strength of this episode. I remember this episode when it aired it left me feeling icky, like what were the writers trying to achieve, are we all ghosts and life is the machine, does anybody really feel sorry for the old man and! more importantly (for me) what would you do if you knew something but couldn’t prove it? Blackmail an old man, straight up murder him or some other form of justice that you see fit. Anyways 1.5 roses from me, until next time.
