The Devil Judge - EP 6

have genuinely been telling everyone in my life to watch this show

Comments

The judge is playing 40d chess, no one is doing it like him I’m sorry, and you know what the teaser is making it look like, that all the rich and powerful will turn on him, but what has the show shown us time and time again, that won’t last long, oh no, they’ll turn on each other and he’ll watch it all burn with a smile and I can’t WAIT

Dan

and perhaps sexually.... you're so real and I just love reading your comments every week. locked into this one just before recording ep 7 and I can't waittttt

Freddie

I slaved away learning fuckass nonsense like the resuscitation protocol for diabetic ketoacidosis and the only thing that kept me going was the knowledge this ep was waiting for me after my exams… and when I say “THE YURI IMPLICATIONS !! BETWEEN THE BOBS !!!” made all my suffering worthwhile 😭😭😭 No but fr this show is undiluted carnal essence like truly freak for freak for FREAK

(Apologies for another interminably long comment - blame the show, not me!) Between Yohan and Sunah, the competence kink in this series is unparalleled (at least when it comes to scheming - not so much when it comes to communication!). And speaking of parallels, I love how he has his bevy of pretty boys and she has her posse of pretty girls. They do truly mirror each other in so many ways. My theory re. Yohan getting Sunah to jump was that they were playing a sick sort of game of chicken with each other and she called his bluff. Two of my favourite running fandom in-jokes are on display in this ep, and that's 1) Jinjoo being the only person in that office who ever does any actual work (and no, work related to as yet undisclosed masterplans doesn't count Yohan! And neither does undercover espionage Gaon!) - no wonder she gets frustrated! And 2) everyone just blindly accepting Gaon still living with Yohan for no discernible reason whatsoever other than homosexuality despite numerous physical alterations and near-chokings and general explosive disagreements. I love how quickly we viewers just stop questioning it, but at the same time I have so many questions as to how it works in-show - do they come to work together? I don't think we've ever seen Gaon drive a car so does Yohan drive them both in? Do they stagger their arrivals so ppl don't know they came together? Does Gaon get to sit upfront or does he have to lie down in the backseat so nobody sees him? What about leaving at the end of the day?? We know the Prof's aware they've shacked up but what about everyone else? I'm pretty sure Jinjoo would have something to say about it if she knew! And what does Elijah think is going on tween them?? (Though to be fair she's probably just so relieved to have someone normal around to talk to for once that she doesn't care to question why he's still there!) Your observation bout him using the witness was something I'd not thought of before, but that's why the show's so great, there's always something more to uncover. My fave thing bout Yohan putting himself on trial was how he used it to basically get himself a democratic mandate, cos up til then he'd officially been chosen by the President/elites rather than been 'elected' by the ppl, but now he can genuinely say that everything he does is with their support/on their behalf since they just voted to keep him, so it gives him/his actions a legitimacy that was previously lacking. His brain!!! Re. the role of the public - one motif the show keeps emphasising via various characters is the power of a good story/image - I think Jinjoo says it way back in the first ep when she's talking bout them being picked for the job cos they're good-looking, that ppl choose to believe the words of those they like over those telling the truth - 'charm is power'. And Yohan's little ep 4 epilogue line about his sob story being the type of tale ppl like to hear, and then Minister Cha says it again this ep, that a good story is more important than proof when it comes to public opinion. Admittedly it's a rather cynical view of 'the public' but I gotta say it's one I find hard to disagree with, sadly! I think we've seen a lot of it around recently, particularly with the rise of right-wing populism. To quote Bonnie Tyler/the Fairy Godmother, in times of crisis/discontent, ppl are holding out for a hero, so when one (seemingly) comes along, punishing the powerful, restoring justice to the powerless, positioning himself on the side of the ppl vs the elites, plus he's hot as hell AND has a tragic backstory to boot...yeah, I think that would do it! Who wouldn't quash any niggling doubts when the 'hero' in question is so compelling/fine?? (And I guess what's the alternative? The status quo? If there's nobody else offering anything different, then you're stuck choosing tween definitely dodgy and potentially dodgy but also potentially revolutionary, so you might think well what have I got to lose?) Something I forgot to talk about from last ep was your comment bout Gaon shaking Yohan up emotionally, cos I loved that - my absolute favourite fanvid for this show deconstructs the power dynamics tween them and demonstrates how, though Yohan appears to have all the power in that relationship (he's older, he's richer/higher status, he's Gaon's boss, and of course he has the all the info on what exactly it is he's planning), in many ways it's Gaon who has the upper hand emotionally, and that makes for a really fascinating dynamic. Unlike Yohan, Gaon's had a loving upbringing, he has a wider support system, and he's very emotionally intelligent. Like you said, Sunah shakes Yohan up intellectually, and I think Yohan shakes Gaon up ideologically (and occasionally physically! and perhaps sexually...), but yes, Gaon shakes Yohan up emotionally. And that actually gives him a LOT of power, just maybe in a less obvious way. And when you put that unconventional dynamic in the context of a culture that places a lot of emphasis on social hierarchy, it makes their relationship especially transgressive (and there's maybe something to be said here bout using that transgression as a symbolic stand-in for their queerness since the latter can't be made explicit?). I can testify that the gaggery does indeed continue right until the very end! And in fact there are often multiple gags per episode so you actually have even MORE than nine to look forward to!

Literally cannot wait for next ep im clawing the walls

Freddie

It's just so funny that gaon still comes home and cooks for them BC THEYRE MARRIEDDDD. Listen I'm p sure I did mention the yuri bc imo yohan and seonha are that meme about a lesbian and a gay man getting married 😅

Char

Ahhh Gaon cooking breakfast for them, and staying up with Elijah when she was worried about Yohan. THAT’S MY FAMILY!! Really loved the scene of Cha Gyeonghee (Minister of Justice bob) smoking the cigar while waiting for the idols to light it for her. You’d usually see such scenes done by like male actors ( e.g. as mafia leaders in dramas). I just thought it’s really awesome how this drama has been flipping stereotypical kdrama gender tropes.

CAN NEXT WEEK HAPPEN RIGHT NOW
