absolutely LOVEEDDD this insight thank you so much for sharing, this makes a lot of sense for Teh. This is one of my fav things about reacting is understanding the nuance in the writing that I wouldn't have found myself so I really appreciate this so much!

2024-09-25 03:03:10 +0000 UTCReally enjoying your reactions! I kept bawling my eyes out with you 😭 sorry for the up-coming ramble but I wanted to slightly add perspective on the cultural perplexity represented in the show. (From Teh’s perspective) Something I think ITSAY does exceptionally well is represent the very specific queer coming-of-age experiences among Chinese descendent Thai communities (yes there is a slight nuance). While Teh seems to enjoy an openly “welcoming” community and Oh-Aew is “trapped” in the resort with his parents- if you notice Oh’s family is fully Thai and both his parents seem to be more accepting of his sexuality (he can openly cry/talk to them aka show his feelings). While his dad wants him to work at the resort it seems to be out of protecting Oh rather than a concern of what outsiders might say.. Whereas Teh is from a Chinese-Thai family raised by a single mother (other layers of a single mother needing to show off to the community how well she can raise her sons etc) and if we know anything about what comes from deeply rooted Chinese/ Russian/ Arab etc cultures is their dismissiveness of queerness plus the constant comparison between siblings/ more traditional and conservative environment etc. This might explain why he fully believes his feelings for Oh are a “passing phase” and explain some his apparent contradictory actions. As you said he appears somewhat “useless” with Oh’s journey and their relationship. He only ever brings up “helping” Oh to study in stead of talking about feelings.. which sadly comes from his cultural shackles. Teh probably wasn’t brought up to discuss feelings but focus on “practical” things= for him helping Oh to achieve his dreams. Also, explains Teh’s fixation on his own grades/ his acting desire and being “straight” presenting- because in his mind all these make him the perfect son which his mother can brag about to the community and measure up to Hoon. The scene at the beginning of the episode was especially powerful as Oh and Teh sat across Hoon and his gf.. that direct comparison was too stark in Teh’s mind making him jump even more. To Teh that position he gave up is basically representing his whole life (as sadly, worth=achievements in his mind) hence the director really made Teh’s despair such a focus at the end of this ep 😭 as a fellow conservative culture kiddo this scene broke me 🥲 Teh is the most relatable character to many for these reasons. I think these elements of representation are exactly why ITSAY really stood out at the time and especially amongst Asian fans and particularly why it has the most Chinese following amongst BLs to date. Unfortunately I see Teh being labelled as “narcissist/ red flag” often while ignoring his cultural shackles. Oh’s experience regarding gender and sexuality are extremely well portrayed but I also wanted to highlight how Teh’s own cultural setbacks add so much depth to the overall story 😭 ITSAY is perfection and my all time fav BL so thank you for reacting to it 💕 Looking forward to last ep 🫶

2024-09-22 06:47:51 +0000 UTCthe chinese idioms used as a read to teh by oh-aew is still one of my favorite things he does. and yes to the crying when teh gives him the book in the first place and that whole interaction to the underwater scene, the build up to the kiss and then the devastating scene after is so heartbreaking and makes me tear up every time. oh-aew and teh both breaking down when teh just can't say the thing and say they are more than friends. even knowing that teh was giving his spot up, i was stressed rewatching it with you because he truly thinks he's being helpful without realizing how his lack of communication has just made everything so bad. so looking forward to seeing your thoughts on how it ends and whenever you decide to continue with the sequel. pp and bilkin really are that pair~
