There were meme's in the 90's, and those were meme's. Meme's have existed as long as humanity has, and the word itself has existed since the 1970's. It just became more well known when "internet meme's" started exploding, but even internet meme's started existing in the 90's. One of the first internet meme's I ever saw was the Dancing Baby meme in 1998, and the hamster dance meme I used to send my friends in 1999.

2026-02-28 05:17:44 +0000 UTCIt's funny that you read that fun fact where people on the set weren't allowed to quote Jim's lines from his earlier movies--because in the 90s, Ace Ventura and The Mask were quoted ad nauseum. There weren't memes in the 90s, it was just kids at school doing Ace Ventura and/or The Mask impressions all day long, running it into the ground so bad that you start to hate Jim Carrey. There was even Ace Ventura and The Mask cartoons on Saturday morning--that's 2 separate shows, not Ace and The Mask... can you imagine?
