JIM CARREY - FRANCHISE FRIDAYS!

Comments

Agreed. I think... Cable Guy might be his best movie.

Pogo Yaga

Oh, same. I expect the genre mix might not be Ashleigh's favorite but it's such a great visual oddball quirky movie- lots of music, dancing, fashion; a perfect 80's mood piece.

At least most of the comments I read were admitting the transphobia *in* the film was bad. I mean: when people admitted it was even there. Which is the worst problem. Cis people don't just care *less* about bigotry when it doesn't effect them, they also sometimes turn a blind eye to it or don't notice it at all. And then go about insisting that if they don't notice it, it's not a problem.

Deep down? I mean, I still (I'm LGBTQ+) enjoy the early parts of the movie. Courteney Cox, especially, and Sean Young are great in it. I like the music and I kind of enjoyed the harsh commentary on football fan-ism. But? Yeah, once the movie takes "that turn" it's indefensible.

Ya know... I think I feel a little sorry for Peggy Sue Got Married. It's a nice little movie, just: Jim doesn't have a large part in it.

I'm going to second the advice to skip Ace Ventura. As much nostalgia as I have for watching it when I was younger, and as much as I still find some sections incredibly funny, it has really not aged well at all. It's a product of its time unfortunately and it's fairly homophobic and transphobic all around.

Hi Ashleigh, I wanted to gently suggest skipping Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Even though it’s remembered as a goofy ’90s comedy, a big part of the film’s humor depends on making gender identity and gender nonconformity the punchline. It plays on the idea that being trans or gender-variant is something deceptive, shocking, or disgusting — and the audience is invited to laugh at that reaction. That kind of framing hasn’t aged well. We know a lot more now about how media affects people. Organizations like the American Psychological Association and The Trevor Project have shown that repeated exposure to homophobic and transphobic language or portrayals contributes to stigma and “minority stress,” which is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among LGBTQ+ people — especially youth. Even when it’s meant as comedy, those jokes reinforce stereotypes that have historically been used to justify discrimination and harm. There’s so much funny content out there that doesn’t rely on punching down. It just may not be worth revisiting this one.

+1 One of my favorite movies he's in. I love his portrayal of western characters.

RIP Robert Duvall. I know that "Apocalypse Now" will probably win the poll, but I'll be voting for "Secondhand Lions", which IMHO is a terribly underrated film.

W. Randy Hoffman

Definitely need you to watch “Earth Girls Are Easy” at some point, but I wouldn’t count them among his best movies.

There's 5 Fridays in May, you could save it for then and add on Dumb and Dumber.

Joe Blankenship

Right? Dumb and Dumber is much funnier than The Mask, in my book.

Joe Blankenship

I hope at some point you watch the cable guy. It’s a darker comedy but still has great moments-especially the medieval times scene

Brooke Cerio

I’m really surprised that Dumb and Dumber isn’t in the lead. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like that movie, and it still makes me laugh to this day and has Ashleigh’s humor. Ace didn’t age well, and liar liar does show Jim’s physical acting skills. I do hope she watches The Truman show because it still holds up on its commentary of reality tv and celebrity, and was ahead of its time to do so. It also showcases Jim’s serious acting chops. Also Surpsied to see some hate for that movie as well here in the comments and wondering why So my picks for Ashleigh would be dumb and dumber and the Truman show

Brooke Cerio

I absolutely love Peggy Sue Got Married (because it was filmed in my hometown and high school) but I totally forgot Jim was even in it. Liar Liar, The Mask and The Truman Show are among my top favorite of his movies, along with: Bruce Almighty, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Majestic, and Man on the Moon (but you have to have watched the TV show, TAXI, to truly appreciate how great he was in the role).
