I know everyone was expecting a lot of comments on this one lol. "I know he's evil, but I didnt know he had it in him like that." I think this is why something drastic needed to occur. The audience needed to be reminded who Spike really is. An argument can be made that what he is feeling for Buffy might be love trying to manifest, but without a soul it never will. That is the realization that occurs in this episode for me, and firmly transitions into whatever comes next. . .if you know, you know. We can argue all day about whether or not it needed to be an SA scene. It probably could have been handled in other ways, but I think something like that needed to happen.
