Malcolm X (1992)

Comments

I'm still watching and enjoying it...I it's cool she's checking out articles. Hopefully, she checks out his real debates. I think thats the best way to see the real Malcolm. Also side note, you mentioned white people in the crowd. You have to read or listen to his autobiography but at 41 I can unfortunately say similar. Not all... but even when people mean good when situations come up and they have to choose....they'll choose not just survival but a better life. You can be an Ivy League grad...and your best friend may stop talking because he wants to join the country club..as he should. But also white people in the crowd, they're not all there because they agree. They're paying attention to the battlefield

eeesh, that teacher scene hits home. in 3rd grade I scored higher than the rest of my class on end of grade testing. She sent me to recess early and asked them why they let that little black boy outscore them. As an adult I learned my dad and her husband worked together and my dad had seniority over him. And their kid went to public school while I was in that particular private school.

love it... before watching. I didn't think to recommend this but this is THE Denzel movie. Malcolm X is really interesting, this does a good job following his autobiography but there's so much more in the book, especially his childhood

Great reaction again MJ. I'm so glad you enjoyed this film and were also able to educate yourself a little more on the life of Malcolm X. I know you stated that you wanted to check out some of the newspaper articles highlighting Malcolm's murder during that time, but if there's more info and knowledge you would like to learn about his life, I encourage you to read the Autobiography of Malcolm X as well! The book goes a little more in depth on some details within Malcolm's life because even as great as this film was, Spike could only speak on so much, even in a 3 hour plus film! I think it's a great read, that you will definitely enjoy

Tony Goodley

Love the reaction MJ, as always a W with this one.

Hollywood was apparently furious when Spike Lee obtained the rightes to Malcolm's biography. Don't forget Crooklyn!

Norman

The dancing is in the swing category but they were doing "Lindy Hop" which is a specific type of swing dancing.

💯💯💯💯

I saw it in the theater too! About the same age. It was of my favorite movies for years, but I haven’t watched it in years. Can’t wait to check it out again.

Todd Rush

This is obviously different in different places. I grew up in a mullet-headed, big truck, hunting/logging community and I learned about Malcolm X in high school. It’s what got me interested in him.

Crazy enough… One of Malcolm's killers is still alive and living comfortably in NJ. There was a documentary series that was released on Netflix a few years ago that revealed who his real killers were, how most of them managed to get away, and how two of the three men who were arrested for his murder were actually innocent. "Who Killed Malcolm X" on Netflix. It shows lots of actual footage from that period and even from outside the ballroom where Malcolm's audience attacked one of the shooters.

What's crazy is Angela Bassett was in three biopics that are amongst some of the greatest ever back to back to back. She was in the Jacksons and American Dream she was in this movie Malcolm X And she played Tina Turner and what's Love got to Do with it. She's been in some of the greatest biopics of all time

Another great reaction MJ. It is a damn shame how this family lost three generations of men. Malcolm's father, himself and his grandson as well who died in Mexico under suspicious circumstances in 2013 at the age of 28. After 60 years his family is now suing the FBI, CIA and NYPD because it is believed they helped to orchestrate the assassination of Malcolm X. If you saw in one of those final scenes he was under surveillance by government agents

MJ, I love the reaction! What makes both Malcolm and Denzel’s portrayals so powerful is that he’s not just a leader: he’s a truth seeker, someone who strips everything down to expose the root of the problem with unwavering intensity.

Jfk was good for civil rights as far as trying to make black people in other races be equal in this country. But if you look into him he has done some very evil things as well that gets swept under and looked over. Not going to get into the Cuban missile crisis. Not going to get in to the wars that we were in prior to the Vietnam war, but JFK has a shady history and that's what Malcolm X was referring to

mondawmin mall

In his autobiography Malcolm spoke about his regret over telling the white woman that she could do nothing to help.

mondawmin mall

You said you don't wanna say white government but this is the 60's there is not a single person of color in any powerful branch of government. Not one

mondawmin mall

Yoooo you was Jehovah's witness... Of course it always be the finest women that was raised Jehovah's witness. All the finest women I've ever met always end up being from that religion. Ion know they put something in y'all water cuz damn

There is a physical benefit to not eating pork because pork is also one of the leading causes of heart disease

mondawmin mall

The actor doing the West Indian accent is actually West Indian but he doesn't always put the accent on unless the role requires him to

mondawmin mall

The dancing that you were referring to is called "swing"

mondawmin mall

Happy you decided to get to this gem 💎 And it’s honestly not your fault that you weren’t familiar with Malcolm X. The American educational system goes out of their way to not teach kids about him or others like him in school. I had to educate myself growing up. Best thing I ever did.

Black ppl straightening their hair was even more a mental thing then now. Or Maybe moreso now. But it's the result of always being told black was ugly, our hair is "Nappy" or being told we have "Bad Hair" because it's different. While seeing white men were the example of masculinity , strength etc and white women were the example of beauty, femininity etc. Slavery and everything that came with it, was more than physical, it was even more psychological. Because it planted the seed of self hatred in the black community. Maybe not every black person, but it's there. You see it on TV , even media.

Anthony Turner

Do t doubt yourself MJ, if you were around back then you'd be out there Jamming too. I can't believe you said your "Coochie would be out" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Anthony Turner

The dancing scene I think they called it SWING. You can see real footage of ppl dancing this style on YouTube. They was getting down too, I was like DAMN! We weren't doing NOTHING compared to they generation. 👍🏾😆

Anthony Turner

I saw it in theaters . I was 15 or 16 then, man that theatre was packed. Spike didn't get studio support to make the film, entertainments and athletes helped him. Micheal Jackson, Janet Jackson ,Magic Johnson, Micheal Jordan,,and many others. Denzel was already a good actor, but this performance was legendary. She Gotta Have It, Do The Right Thing, made Spike a star, this film did the same for him.

Anthony Turner

i was around when this film came out but I did not see it in theaters I herd storys about this film.

Andrew Reyes

Snitching on grandma is nasty work 😭

Joel Cortez

React to king miniseries it’s about mLK

Love the reaction, and I’m glad that you enjoyed the biopic like I did. It’s also cool that you were gathering information while watching the movie to learn more about the history of Malcolm, much love❤️
