Derideal Remake - scans+ Blog in comic making

I'm not sure I shared these with you, these are the original script pages of Derideal.

I learned a lot doing these... but I wish I would have known what I know now to make a better job. All of the comics you see released, have been on the works for 2 years or more...

Derideal is a story I made and I've been also self-teaching myself how to make a comic, making lots of mistakes along the way.

Making a comic is more than just add panels, it involve different compositions and some time is spent in making the page layouts to make everything to be understood by the reader.

THE SCANS

You see the pages are torn apart from a sketchbook? it's because when I was making the story I wasn't entirely sure how to make it flow as I wanted, and I was making scenes that I just wanted to see in the story and told myself I was going to paste everything together later to make it a single story that made sense.

it was a bad idea? more or less, it got bad and good points.

Good:

it allows me to extend a scene by adding more pages

it allows me to re-order the scenes and the story isn't affected that much, just the "flow"

it was fun drawing just scenes I wanted to see.

Bad

it requires more time to revise and then paste everything together.

you're never sure if the order you pick was good.

some scenes are 4 pages, other more than 10, making difficult to separate the story in chapters or episodes.

I had to separate episodes by "theme" of the story, and include scenes inside, makes difficult for me to know when an episode starts and end.

Why remake the comic?

because the original derideal was inconsistent in artstyle, and I hated some parts of the story.

I felt it was pointless to re-draw the same pages, the same story all over again.

I wanted to put more info for C.Wally motivation

Include Dr. Orozco and Dr. Earlson that are shown in part 2 but barely were background in the original part 1.

Include why the rebels were in the building in the first place.

Make Laura know Aden for longer time inside the laboratory, making them support each other.

Which I took in consideration?

- show more about the scientist and the experiment "project Prime"

- include more clues about Laura

- try to make every artwork more consistent

Which things I failed and should have done better?

Comic hasn't ended, but I feel despite having Laura from time to time in the story, I left out some bits of her that made her feel more alive, so far Laura I think was the character I couldn't figure out how to give something else to do in this version, even less than in the original.

it is a problem, but I wasn't aware of the issue when I was writing the comic, see? I'm learning with everything I do... too bad I don't think I can fix Laura at this point, but I hope she is at least cute to see.

Despite I tried to include more of the rebels, I don't think it worked. They're not so important honestly, but I guess story could have been better if you care more about them.

I could have done better page layouts in the script, and care more about doing more iterations, makes slow... but the final result is better in general.

You probably haven't seen anything new I can do, since all of the comics that are on production now got more than 3 years the story was written and the sketches made.
