doctor who season 5 episode 5 [full length]

hi friends!

here is my timed reaction to doctor who season 5 episode 5 "flesh and stone"

the story from the last episode continues!!!!

thanks for watching with me!

I interpreted the “making a joke of it” more of “making light of it” as it was not really an “issue” in this episode and was just supposed to be something brushed off

Its played off in a comedic manner. Doctor: "Im 903 years old, do you know what that means?" Amy: "Its been a while." Also, i completely get where Moffat was coming from, I get the motivation.. its just the way its written thats bad. If it was a more serious situation where Amy explains she has a crush on him. Would of been better than you know, sexual assault.

Tommy

Not sure I quite agree with the framing of the ending. I don't see how the ending can be seen as making a joke of sexual assault. It was sexual assault, by definition, no doubt. However, where was there a joke made about it? The ending makes perfect sense when you recall episode 1 of the series. Amy grew up fantasizing about the doctor, its kinda like 'daddy issues' in that she lacked any role models when growing up. All she thought about for 12 years was the doctor coming back and rescuing her from her boring (as she sees it) life and taking her on a fun adventure.

i thought that was looking like bad wolf bay!!!

volatile is definitely a good word for it!!!! such a good description

im glad you shared that part about moffat and his reflection on it. i thought it was very out of place and at least a bit uncomfortable!

Technically, all Doctors have their angry moments. Chris has done it, David did it.. its kinda part of the character. Especially when it involves somebody he likes dying or about to die. Moffat has gone on record saying he hated the ending of the episode in hindsight. The Doctor was straight up sexually assaulted by Amy and he made it a joke. He said he wishes he could rewrite it better.

Tommy

The word I'd use to describe the doctor's rage at the start of this regeneration is "volatile." Probably his worst quality right now, in my opinion. In a way, it goes with the whole childish thing. You know, kids get angry, sometimes really angry, and then it evaporates quickly and they move on. The doctor is all bubbly and innocent and silly and then he has a towering rage because the mysterious woman that he's fated to reportedly murdered someone (potentially him) and then ooo shiny something else. I think the writing is just so good because he already feels like such a fleshed out personality. River is a such an incredible character. What a powerhouse and ultimate foil/partner for the doctor. She's towards the top on my list of ranked companions. Moffat has a stronger affinity for comedy and the witty/snappy rapport between River and the Doctor is exhibit A in my book.

This was the very 1st episode Matt, Karen & Alex filmed!! The chemistry is amazing when you consider that fact. During filming in 2009 this was also the very 1st time we saw Matt in the tweed costume as 11 in photos from set. Steven Moffat said that he put everything into these episodes, spent far too much time on it & took his eye off the previous episode "Victory Of The Daleks" his major issue in that episode was that despite The Paradigm Daleks being wonderfully made in person ( & I can confirm in person they were well made props) they looked terrible on TV. Moffat said they simply were too big and to tall than Matt on screen. It was a salient lesson in being a new showrunner that you have to choose your battles. The location outside might look familiar 😏 in fact "Bad Wolf Bay" is literally behind the camera looking out to the beach 🤣 I guess the only issue in these episodes is that it does take away from the mystique of the Angels actually seeing them move. I've always been conflicted by it. Then there is the controversial ending. For the record Moffat regrets the scene feeling like it should have been done a different way. In essence his rational was that Amy had survived a near-death experience I think we all see it but it was jarring & doesn't sit well with the majority of fans. Oh and a bit of fun in the previous ep, Alex Kingston flew her knee into Matt's special area in one take as she landed on him & when Matt pulls the rope off ceiling, it wasn't scripted he was just in character & broke it off the set but styled it out as he gave his dialogue lol!! Still a great 2 parter period! 🥰
