Everyone goes through the trauma of DT's 'I don't wanna go' - We know your pain! lol At the time when these aired no one knew who Matt Smith was either, newspapers went with the headline 'Doctor Who?' So don't worry about not knowing him, we didn't either - But make sure to grieve DT! But I'm sure you'll love Matt in time :)

2025-01-26 17:46:28 +0000 UTCI became a Patreon because I couldn't watch an edited reaction for these last few episodes! They are too emotional. The build-up of these specials to show us how much the doctor needs a companion was so compelling that sending off David Tennant with the ultimate sacrifice for the most beloved character in the series was so emotional. I can't help but tear up every time I rewatch this. Also, this was the first time rewatching these episodes since Bernard Cribbins passing too and you know what! What an amazing way to remember him through his portrayal of Wilfred. David Is to my Doctor as I watched him through my teens and Wilfred and Donna are My favorite Companions and no one will ever change my mind! I'm so glad you decided to watch this series, Emme, sharing the brilliance of this series with all of us feels like such a privilege shows as good as this exists. I can't wait for you to watch the next seasons, as much as we love and miss David Tennant as the Doctor, Matt Smith I know you'll grow to love too. But Shhhh I shant say no more, Spoilers...

2025-01-20 17:36:11 +0000 UTCi agree! i think i'm more sad about the actor leaving rather than the doctor's regeneration, it is sad to know you won't see someone again but i am always excited to see what's next

2025-01-06 15:51:40 +0000 UTCi'm not trying to completely write myself out just yet but i do think david tennant is "my doctor" for the foreseeable future. i just love his acting, and also hes a great human irl too.

2025-01-06 15:50:58 +0000 UTChonestly it's a testament to 11's first episode (coming very soon) that 11 won people over so fast after this harrowing (amazing) finale lmfao.

2025-01-05 02:48:58 +0000 UTCI cry every time I rewatch, even knowing exactly what's going to happen. The Doctor's burst of outrage is because he knows what's about to happen, and he's just giving himself 30 second to be whiny about it, then immediately doing the right thing (sacrificing himself to save Wilf, thinking it's gonna Kill him dead). I honestly cackled knowing what was coming sometimes. IMO this is the most difficult regeneration, because of the build up and everything. David Tennant is "my doctor" but there is a lot of good stuff to come, and many people prefer Matt Smith's era (and there's a lot of good reaction material in subsequent eps and doctors, for sure).

2025-01-05 02:39:12 +0000 UTCYeah, the showrunner that took over from Russell T Davies, Stephen Moffat really wanted to build the audience overseas at the time, it was a progression throughout the Matt Smith era because Series 5 kept it pretty close to the format of series 1 - 4, it wasn't until series 6 where they catered the show to fit more in line with how they do shows in America. I've been watching since 2006 so I remember the changeover very vividly for some reasons. I've also never been to a con so therefore I've never had a real opportunity to meet or even see any of the actors. The only one I've met was actually David Tennant a few years ago and it was very random, he happened to be living in the city where I'm from for a few weeks and I embarrassingly bumped into and made myself look like an idiot because I was bewildered by him and how random it was 🤣

2025-01-05 00:57:30 +0000 UTCIt's an interesting phenomenon that we all have "my doctor" relationships to the characters- usually the ones that were airing when we fell in love with the show. Mine is Matt Smith but my favorite is 12 (don't want to spoil the actor just in case Emme reads this). But Matt Smith will always be special because he was the one I watched excitedly as it aired week to week and led me head over heels for the show. I went to Tardis Con in Chicago in November and it was amazing how many people had a "my doctor" relationship with the 4th doctor. I just loved that. It's almost like imprinting for fans lol.

2025-01-05 00:23:45 +0000 UTCYea, I picked up the show when they put in the campaign to pull in an American audience. I'm pretty sure it was when they added it to Netflix in America. I feel head over heels for the show and went to comic con a few months later dressed as the 11th doctor! I waited in line starting at 7pm the night before the panel so that I could get a good seat lol.

2025-01-05 00:15:37 +0000 UTCThat's true. I feel a sense of dread that it's coming, cry my eyes out when it's happening, and stop to feel blue for a few hours. Then, I feel the thrill and excitement of a fresh story as I pick up with the new season. I get to re-fall in love with that new doctor. The first episode of the new doctors always instill a sense of "the adventure is beginning again!" I'm sure Emme will go through that, too. She'll feel the fresh joy of the fifth season, especially since it's so good and funnier imo. But there are some people who got to the end of Tennant and just jumped ship. A smaller number with each of the following doctors. I don't really get that. The doctor is bigger than any one incarnation or one personality or one set of quirks. The show is about adventure and bravery and curiosity and invigoration from cultural exchange. No single doctor owns that. Maybe this is gate-keeper of me but anyone who quit doctor who at the time of Tennant leaving years back was never really a doctor who fan. Which, to each their own. There's nothing wrong with deciding a show isn't for you. I've done that with a ton of shows. But I put those people in that category.

2025-01-05 00:13:02 +0000 UTCI never really find the regenerations sad as such. It's more a feeling of excitement for what's next and what the newest version of the Doctor is doing to bring to the table. It's such a pillar of Doctor Who that if someone can't live with it, this isn't the show for them (not trying to imply Emme is one of those people).

2025-01-04 22:15:19 +0000 UTCWe all went through it! I remember being so against Matt Smith taking over and upset David Tennant was leaving but after Matt's first episode I was sold! And incase you didn't know Matt Smith was in Morbius as the Villain and like others have said he's one of the main actors in House Of The Dragon. Without spoiling anything I remember during his time in Doctor Who, was when it really started popping off in America again. I hope you enjoy the new era you are going into, it is very worth it. Still a bit of a wait until you get to my personal favourite though 😏

2025-01-04 20:31:28 +0000 UTCThe time lords are romanticized by the doctor, the show, and the fandom itself. But every time they go on screen in classic who, just like now, they can’t really live up to the mythos. They’re stuffy and pretentious and disconnected and stoic. It makes you realize why the Doctor feels so much more at home among humans. “Ugh he loves playing with earth girls” line by the master cracks me up. What a sassy (and true) read. “You don’t have to own the universe, just see it.” This is one of my favorite doctor who quotes- I painted a DIY framed art piece with that line and it’s been hanging in my home for years. Interestingly, the doctor and the master faced off in classic who (one time of many) under a similar argument. The master is trying to lure the doctor into accepting this source of great power and join the master on a mission of conquest. The doctor replies, “You’ll never understand, will you? I want to see the universe, not rule it.” They both have the same brilliant mind, spirit for adventure, and uncanny ability to charm/manipulate. It’s why they’re best friends. But the Doctor is kind and the master is power-hungry and that stark division is what makes them bitter enemies. I think you put the pieces together in the end but I just wanted to outline some aspects of the “timey wimey” plot for clarity. The time war was so brutal and unhinged with innovative time weapons and absolute chaos that it was “time locked.” Essentially quarantined. Only advanced life forms were allowed to participate (the sontarans once said they were barred) and time travel in and out of the bubble is not allowed. Except the drum beat was like a light bulb planted back in time and the white point star was like a spinning lighthouse thing and so together, they were able to lead the time lords out of the darkness. Back during the time war, the time lords planned to basically nuke all of creation and ascend as a final measure to win the war. The doctor learned of this and killed all time lords, daleks, and Gallifrey itself. Essentially nuked the quarantine area to protect everything outside of it. So that’s why the time lords were trying to escape their fate. We don’t really know who that lady is but people similarly theorize it’s his mom. It’s heartbreaking watching the doctor agonize over dying. It’s one thing to die in battle at the hands of an enemy but another thing to voluntarily enter a chamber and push a button to kill yourself. He didn’t want to die for Wilf but of course he did because… of course he did. “The story of the doctor” that never ends (said by the ood) could be read as the impact of 10 never ending or the person the doctor themself going on. Because 10 is gone but the doctor isn’t. Take a beat, refresh and mourn the 10th doctor. It’s still puts me through the emotional wringer even after all my rewatches. Straight up ugly sobbing. It's okay to just focus on him leaving for a bit. Then, try to go into the next episode with a blank slate, just like the doctor is. It’s my favorite doctor intro episode. The 11th doctor has a special place in my heart because he’s “my doctor.” That’s what people call the doctor who was currently airing when they first fell in love with the show and started watching it live. It creates a kind of special attachment. Full transparency, my number one favorite is down the line (you have so much good content yet to watch!!) but every doctor has hooked me in and made me ugly cry when they leave. I have a unique emotional connection to each one. I can’t believe it wasn’t spoiled that Matt Smith is the 11th doctor! This was his first big role but of course now most people know him from house of the dragon. Or morbius lol. It’s the start of a whole new adventure!! Yay!!

2025-01-04 19:07:00 +0000 UTCDavid Tennant will always be my Doctor and no other Doctor really comes close to my love for him. I remember being a 10 year old child sobbing my eyes watching his regeneration back when this episode first aired on TV on New Years Day 2010. But don't worry although there's a new Doctor now, Doctor Who is an extremely rare series where change is the reason the series continues to survive rather than harming it like what happens in other shows. Matt Smith may take some getting attached to if you're as big of a Tennant fan as I am but he has some absolutely great episodes up ahead. Also this was a huge change for the show since not only did David Tennant leave but so did the show writer Russel T Davies who had been the main showrunner for the series up till this point. So Season 5 is almost like another fresh start for the series like Season 1 was with Christopher Eccleston, new Doctor, new writers, new staff, and a bunch of other new things you'll see when you start Season 5. There's a whole different vibe and look for the show whilst still unmistakably feeling like Doctor Who.

2025-01-04 17:14:04 +0000 UTCI will add, you will come to realise in time, the show is about change and metamorphosis, not just in regeneration but the style and how things are done. Doctor Who is a unique show in how it can change and evolve but still be the same on the inside, just like The Doctor.

2025-01-04 17:04:01 +0000 UTCAlso don't feel bad if your reaction to the end was "who is this guy i'm grieving, give back david" everyone cries to this episode and this happens to everyone, every single time you are firmly attached to the doctor and a new one comes sauntering in, nobody wants to know about them lol

2025-01-04 17:02:09 +0000 UTCThe cuts and marks on The Doctor's face disappeared because the start of the regeneration process was healing him.

2025-01-04 16:43:42 +0000 UTCAhhh RTD was really playing on the heartstrings when he made Tennant's last words 'I don't want to go'. Personally I think it was a bit mean to Matt Smith though, it kind of risks priming the audience to reject him when really the show thrives on people embracing change. My favourite scenes in this episode are between the Doctor and Wilf, some really beautiful moments.

2025-01-04 16:07:53 +0000 UTCAnd here we are. Great reaction, Emme! I can tell you that I was bawling my eyes during the ending just as much as when I first saw it. This is a VERY emotional story, and a good bye to David. incidentally, this WAS the companion story for Wilf. These two episodes were designed so Wilf could travel with the Doctor, at the end of this face's life. Which is great, because Wilf is the literal best.
The Inedible Mattman!
