Blog 09 : Art Block?

May be I'm facing an art block issue.

It's different from other usual art blocks for artists though... I don't consider myself as an easy one to get art blocked. I have been decent with that. I always find a way to get myself to draw, wanting or not.

If you don't know what art block is, it's this thing that happens to us artists once in a while and it stops us from drawing productively. Sometimes you just stare at blank white screen, trying to doodle it out, but nothing comes out well and you feel bad for yourself ending up doing that for hours just to find out you didn't actually do shit the whole day.

Personally it's been so long since I've had an art block like I mentioned, I always CAN get myself to draw. I'm super easily inspired, but for this, it's different.

May be I'm too harsh on myself, but I do NOT want to end up drawing stuffs that look similar or have strong resemble of other fanarts, or at least the good and famous ones. That's been rough. Every time I want to start a piece nowadays, I will have to search for every fanarts of that character on other sites, gather them all, skim through the popular or good looking ones, then look closely through everyone of them so I could come up with a pose/scene idea that won't look similar to what already existed.

And by doing that, it gives me hard time. Sometimes I came up with an idea of my own and found out after I almost finished my sketch that the idea was already taken and for the same character fanart as well, which sucks. This kind of thing is eating me inside, and I don't want to come up with some weird shit just to be different. It's gotta look good, too.

So yeah it's rather a different kind of art block. I know I could get over with this just like every time. I've been doing this for years now, but since I haven't made any good progress for the next pic with these few days (I'm doing either Artoria Lancer Alter or Sento Isuzu next) I figured it's a good time to let you know what I'm up to.

Have you ever faced this kind of problem in your life? Doesn't even have to be drawing related. I know this is bound to happen to any kind of creative field of expertise, or even non creative ones.

So yeah ya'll have a good day.

Never had an artist block since I can't draw. I do have writer's block every now and then whenever I'm writing articles. The thought of making your articles stand out among others while trying to make things coherent as well as not unintentionally plagiarizing other peoples' work sometimes pressure me to a point where I'd rather not look at my drafts and do some other work before getting back to writing. Though the motivation is barely there for me so it's kinda tough to get my fingers to type a single sentence sometimes. You definitely should never let the block affect you for too long or you'll start losing all the momentum.

I looked through all of them that I could find, but in the end, I'll just save and gather up ones that are popular or good. I don't mind and would define "bad looking one" though, but most of the times the non good looking ones tend to be just vanilla posing or extremely cliche scenes which I can just exclude them out of considering pile, or sometimes they will be those extreme fetishes that I won't reach any way. I think my reason to draw each fanart is that I want them to at least look decent and by seeing it people recognize that I drew that piece. Like, when they think about the character and its fanarts, mine is gonna pop up in their head at some point in a good way, not just another piece among the sea.

You say you look through 'popular or good looking' arts, but what about less popular or bad looking art? I have seen plenty of art that is poorly drawn but clearly started from a great idea or concept. Do you only want to be unique amongst the popular art? Are you making art to get maximum attention to it, or for some other reason? I don't mean to imply anything bad about you as an artist, I love your work and we all create things for different reasons. I just thought it might help you to understand why you have this kind of block.

I have an overall better appreciation of art/artists thanks to systems like Patreon, so it's interesting to see what people like yourself come up with. However the thing is since imagination is generally unlimited, there's always the chance you get the coincidental 'same idea/concept', but if that's the case that you are comparing yourself to others and saying that you want to be different instead, that's a bit inflexible. Maybe instead of going 'oh shit someone's done it already' you could consider 'well maybe I can do it as well, but better' or something. I mean I don't draw (so having something nice to look at is always a plus), but you could say the same ideas are always generally cliché or trope - everyone uses them, but it depends on how you execute it at the end which should be what really matters.

I find it hard to decide a pose and scenario as "others might have done it a milisecond ago" .People say nothing is original yet new unthinkable ideas keep popping up.
