I maybe could have rolled it into Mauer's big exposition dump last chapter to keep with the "why we went on this colonisation mission" theme of flashbacks buuuuut there was something Mauer didn't tell Erin. Such as, her crew had the only guy aboard the whole ship j/k
the crew and colonists aren't all women but the vast majority are since they are much cheaper to kept fed and the ones you want if you plan on kicking off population growth.

That makes me think there's gotta be one person whose job it is to save money on food costs and that person's going to have a real bad day when they get the report from this mission.
