I think it is a thing of "better this than being a blueberry." As to the pay thing, Maybe they did her some favours. payed some college bills perhaps, then got recruited along the way.

A couple things. 1: Based in Katie's bit of dialogue, I am under the impression that she isn't as brainwashed as I want to believe. 2: I think that they will some how subdue Katie, but it won't be easy, or maybe they will be caught before they can enact their plan.
