November 15th: Idol Project
Let’s shake off the Halloween hangover with something light-hearted. And you sure as sugar can’t get any more light-hearted than an anime about seven idol singers being forced to compete in an intergalactic competition while wearing skimpy outfits. Before they made the audience go mild with Wild Cardz, the forgotten Studio OX made their debut to the world with this four-episode slice of trashy otaku cheese. Is Idol Project worth your time or should it be given the hook? We shall see.
November 29th: Digital Devil Story
The popular Persona series would be nothing without the popular Shin Megam Tensei series which would be nothing without the game that started it all Digital Devil Story. And on the same year it came out on Famicom, the same year a tie-in OVA was released for it. Indirectly setting the standard for future Shin Megami Tensei titles down the line.
December 28th: Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer
Before 2025 can wrap up, the possum’s gonna be tackling a big one just in time for New Year’s Eve. We’ll be talking about the impressively animated and philosophically dense second movie in the Urusei Yatsura franchise, Beautiful Dreamer. See how it helped mold Mamoru Oshii into the arthouse dynamo he became, how shockingly divisive it was on release, and whether it still is a masterpiece to this day?
January 17th: Rhea Gall Force
Boy, it’s been a minute since we last tackled the Gall Force series. With a trilogy ending on a VERY final note in the rearview mirror, you would think we wouldn’t have much to discuss regarding this series. But alas, Gall Force was still incredibly popular in the late 80s. So, AIC and Artmic had no choice but to give it a reboot. Only this time, instead of cosplaying Alien, the franchise is now cosplaying The Terminator.
January 31st: SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
I wish to shake things up going into the 8th year of KYOTO VIDEO. So instead of covering one anime, I’m gonna be doing something different. It will still be anime related, but the topic is gonna be done in a format I’ve been wanting to try for years now. Stay tuned! It’s gonna be a surprise.
