The Cockpit - August 15th:
VJ day is turning 80 this August. 80 years since the end of World War II. The perfect opportunity to talk about Leiji Matsumoto’s The Cockpit. A 1993 OVA trilogy that tells sobering war stories about pilots and their missions, all told from an Axis powers point of view. A pretty hard sell to say the least, but does it work?
Grenadier - August 30th:
It’s been awhile since we’ve done a good “girls-with-guns” title. So how about a title from the 00s when the animation was digital and the fanservice was plentiful. 2004’s Grenadier leads us into a brave new world of “Trigun but with large breasts.” Can such a conceit work? RG Veda - September 15th:
It’s finally happened, everyone. KYOTO VIDEO is finally gonna talk about the famed shoujo manga group Clamp. Once upon a time, Clamp ruled the world of shoujo anime and manga, but even they had to start somewhere. And that was their adaptation of one the four Vedas with pretty boys: 1991’s RG Veda.
Puppet Princess – September 29th:
We’re not done with ninja anime just yet? Not the year 2000 for that matter. We travel back a quarter century to look at the wild and weird 45-minute OVA Puppet Princess. An adaptation of an anthology by Kazuhiro Fujita, this one bizarre beast that attempts to be the next Ninja Scroll, but with puppets.
Boogiepop Phantom - October 24th:
The weird only gets weirder and the year 2000 only gets more 2000. This Halloween we are celebrating by looking at one of the strangest popular titles of the new millenium’s dawn: Boogiepop Phantom. We’ll examine what makes it so strange, what makes it so important, and why hasn’t become a true classic like similar titles such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain.
