Dang, I knew this joint was a mess plot-wise (but that wasn't such a big deal in the 80s). But Urasawa interpreting Oisshi, whoa, that's beyond Ghost in the Shell (Oishi doing Shirow, the joke was no one would know what was going on). The 80s saw a LOT more variety in animation styles. There was a plenty of Euro-bleed (Cobra looks like it stepped out of Heavy Metal Magazine). This one is somewhere at sea (which sea is an open question). The big problem with people going for outrageous American Animation is that they aren't practiced enough (or are under such a time crunch) that their timing is usually "off". The other "80s" marker, the pacing is really messy. Too many original properties being done without a proper script or writer (and usually on a tight deadline). I mean, this is fun, but it's also a mess.. "Babylon" looks like what Ralph Bakshi THINKS his projects will be, but this staff doesn't take running out of time and money as an excuse..
