Original Dirty Pair | KYOTO VIDEO

We see the long-awaited return of the Lovely Angels as we delve into their OVA series/second season. And after the missteps of Project Eden and Nolandia, does this one have what it takes to be a worthy continuation of Kei and Yuri's adventures?

I heard Nanmo took a job in American TV to improve his "Quality of Life".. Episode 2 IS a Terminator riff, but a kinda special one, beyond the Halloween shenanigans. The basic outline (crashed shuttle releases killer robot) is pretty much Shirow's "Black Magic M66/Boobytrap". They missed a trick by Kei not feeling Deja Vu about the situation (VA Kyoko Tengu has a small role as another red-headed tough chick in the Anime of M66). The Wedding episode has a hidden reference to an Urusei Yatsura episode. The bit with Yuri and her beau is shot EXACTLY like the commercial in UY episode 110 (the magic lipstick one). I rate episode 6 (the Casino episode) much higher, but then it's clear that while we both love the characters and series, Kaiser and I differ a LOT on what we like. The Casino bit (which, like the "God" episode, is an adaption of one of the novels) leans into one aspect of the girls' relationship. They both think THEY are the main character, and the other is the sidekick. Conversely episode 9 while well made, is tonally VERY different from the rest of the stories in the set (it fits in with 005 ok I guess). The animation is very spotty in the OVAs, it jumps from amazing to crude in a heartbeat, and the sound is famously all on one channel. Back when we were acquiring these from Japan in sets of 2 the order of preference went 3, 1, 2-4 (about the same, matter of taste), 5. Episode 10, while weak, does show the clear links Takachio has to BeBop (through "Crusher Joe" as well). Episode 1 has "Aliens" all over it (including a silent Vasquez-clone), but it also came out right with Sunrises Starship Troopers OVA. This team may be the most MI bunch we've seen in Anime.

So glad there’s another Dirty Pair video! I just started rereading the Adam Warren Dirty Pair—love those, too, even with all the differences.
